The 2023 Portland Classic is returning this week at the Columbia Edgewater Country Club, Oregon. Being hosted since 1972, it is the longest-running non-major tournament on the LPGA Tour. For many decades it was 54 holes but in 2013 it became a 72-hole event.
Since its inception, the tournament has been given many names. It started as the Portland Ladies Classic and was later called the Portland Ping Championship, Ping-Cellular One Golf Championship, Safeway Classic, and others. In 2014, it finally ended with the Portland Classic. Let’s find out some important information in relation to the event, in terms of the field as well as the prize money.

Quite a few big names will be gracing the event. Fresh off her victory at the AIG Women’s Open earlier this month, Lilia Vu will be participating in the event. She is currently the World No.1 and will look to maintain that position by chasing the win. Another big name playing at the event is World no. 2 Nelly Korda who hasn’t had much success this year in terms of trophies.
Besides Korda, the other participants are Ruoning Yin, Lydia Ko, who is looking for a better finish after her Dana Open fiasco, the US Women’s Open Allisen Corpuz, Charley Hull, and Brooke Henderson who is a two-time Portland Classic winner. Lexi Thompson is another big name who is searching for another LPGA win and is suffering from bad form this season.
Last year the event was won by Andrea Lee for whom Portland was her maiden LPGA Tour title. She enters the field as a defending champion. Lee is having a good year as she is part of this year’s Solheim Cup and finished 9th at the AIG.
She will definitely eye the top position hoping to repeat history. Some other defending players from previous years like 2020 winner Georgia Hall and 2018 winner Marina Alex are also playing this week.
