Can Charley Hull's determination to play through pain lead to long-term success or more setbacks?

Since October 2022, Charley Hull has yet to secure a win on the LPGA or Ladies European Tour. However, this absence of victories doesn’t tell the whole story. While it might seem like her form has dipped, the truth is that in the 2024 season, the Kettering native has been battling a shoulder injury that has hindered her chances. Mid-season, Hull suffered a shoulder injury after a fall in the shower, which has been a significant setback in her pursuit of a win.

The 28-year-old initially feared she had torn a ligament or broken her bone, but after further evaluation, Hull was diagnosed with arthritis. Following the injury, she took time off to recover and rehabilitate. She made her comeback at Le Golf National, although she struggled to find her rhythm. Now, two months later, Hull has opened up about her recovery. In an interview with Sky Sports, the English pro revealed, “My injury is fine now. It took about a month to get over. I’m all good.” But as it turns out, physical issues continue troubling her.

Charley Hull is currently teeing off at the Pelican. During the Pro-Am on Wednesday, she got stretched out once again, pretty much like a lot of her other events in the past. This is because of her ailing arthritis. Take the Solheim Cup, for example. When asked about it at the post-round presser, she said, “I always have bad hips. I’ve been kind of lazy on the physio the last two weeks. Haven’t had any physio, and it’s just gone out.” She went on to add that she was not feeling very well, and had stomach pains and cramps, which ended up tightening her whole body.

“I’m going to have a bit of physio and some needles put in me after the round,” she added. Despite the pain, Charley Hull is tied for the lead with Jiwon Jeon after the opening round. While it might not be reflecting on her game, she still could feel the pain. Nonetheless, “At the end of the day I think pain is a weakness of the mind so you just got to hit through it,” concluded the LPGA Tour star.

There was another huge reason behind Charley Hull being able to take the lead at Pelican. She was aiming to cardiac ten birdies, that is because to motivate her, her boyfriend gave her a bet. “I had a bet with my boyfriend. Every five birdies I make we have an extra day on our holiday,” she added. She is hoping to card more birdies over the weekend to fulfill the aspiration.
