Diksha Dagar's shocker at the Evian Championship—fluke or the start of something big?

Shocking Departures! Two top pros have already left the Evian-les-Baines greens in France, where the fourth women’s major of the year, the Amundi Evian Championship, has been taking place. Even before the cut was made, the first pro to exit the field was the 2-time LPGA Tour winner, Ashleigh Buhai.

The South African pro played only a couple of holes during round one when her toe, which was broken at the time of the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, started hurting again at the hilly Champions Course. Buhai was then forced to leave the Evian Championship, citing an illness as she said, “I was optimistic, but unfortunately, my toe didn’t hold up on the hills here in Evian.” Following suit, Diksha Dagar has also withdrawn from the Amundi Evian Championship.

The LPGA Tour posted a tweet on X (formerly known as Twitter) and relayed that even before the second round of the Evian Championship could start, Indian pro-Dagar had withdrawn from the event, citing illness. The 22-year-old was struggling in the first round as she carded four bogeys, two double bogeys, and three birdies to be T120 with a score of 5 over 76.

This is Dagar’s second withdrawal of the season. The first was at the U.S. Women’s Open at Lancaster Country Club, even before the major started. Both times, the actual reason behind the withdrawal was not disclosed. The LET pro may return to the greens at the Dutch Ladies Open, starting in a week. While only two players have exited the Evian-les-Baines greens, there is a chance that another withdrawal might come sooner.

Two-time LPGA Tour winner may withdraw from Amundi Evian Championship

At the Aramco Team Series in London, Charley Hull abruptly withdrew from the event after only playing six holes at the Centurion Club due to a shoulder injury. The LPGA star later revealed on her social media that the injury was a result of a “nasty fall” she was subjected to before starting the event. Following this, Hull faced constant pain in her shoulder and, after taking medical advice, decided to withdraw from ATS London.

Something similar might follow at the Amundi Evian Championship, as Hull’s injury might have reared its head again, affecting her gameplay on the French greens. In the first round of the fourth major, the English pro struggled more than anyone else in the field, which could be due to her potential injury. The 28-year-old carded 10 bogeys, including a double bogey with three birdies shot in between.

Indeed, it was going worse for the Kettering native as she finished solo 130 after round one’s conclusion. Following her disastrous round, Hull might choose to withdraw from the event, as her injury is probably disrupting her gameplay. The Amundi Evian Championship might lose another great star from its field if the state of injury aggravates. Will Hull persevere and play the second round or exit the major? It remains to be seen.
