Rose Zhang has had nothing short of an exceptional start to her career as a professional in 2023. She played in five events as a pro out of which the American golfer won one, her debut LPGA Tour event, while finishing inside the top 10 for three of the majors she took part in. She has exhibited an excellent performance throughout the year and will be hoping to carry the momentum ahead on her first AIG Women’s Open as a pro.

Currently ranked No. 32 in the Rolex rankings, Zhang opened up about how she is looking to play well in the major. Talking about her mindset, the 20-year-old mentioned how it is important that one should treat it as a regular event. Moreover, she expressed how one should look at themselves as “just a player going out on a difficult golf course and learning how to navigate the conditions and how the course is playing,” which is vital for a player to be successful.

Talking about her mental health and the pressure she is feeling as a golfer playing the major for the first time, she said, “There’s a lot of pressure. There’s a lot of mental toughness that you have to go through, and just learning how to be aware of that allows you to play well.” Although she hasn’t won a major yet, she will be looking to grab her first with this tournament.

It is not surprising that the young golfer is prepared cognitively just days before the start of one of the biggest majors in the LPGA Tour. A skill she, no doubt, was able to acquire at Stanford where she spent two years in school.

Zhang is keeping an eye out for the future

The golf pro had left her school early as she turned pro in 2023. She claimed her maiden title at the 2023 Mizuho Americas Open where she finished 9-under 279. Rose shared her thoughts for the future which included her plans to resume school in January. “In the winter I’ll be going back to the beautiful campus… being in that environment of going to class and hanging out with the team,” continued the young pro as she imagined her school life at Stanford.

Having being often compared to the GOAT of golf, Tiger Woods. She had claimed many records including the most number of wins for a Stanford golfer in school history at 12. Tiger is tied with Maverick McNealy and Patrick Rodgers at 11 on the men’s side. Her skills, techniques, and determination along with the accolades she gathered as an amateur golfer provide much reason for the comparison.
