France can finally celebrate a winner of the Evian Championship, all thanks to homegrown golfing sensation Celine Boutier. She is also just the third Frenchwoman ever to win an LPGA major title, following Patricia Meunier-Lebouc at the 2004 Kraft Nabisco Championship and Catherine Lacoste at the 1967 US Women’s Open.

Boutier, after scripting history at the 2023 Evian Championship, opened up to the press about what her maiden major win means for French golf. Let’s dive in to find out more!

Hidden away at the bottom of the Alps, Evian-les-Bains is a calm and picturesque French town that overlooks the beautiful Lake Geneva. But, on Sunday, this little spa town secured its own place in history, owing to the heroics of France’s very own LPGA star Celine Boutier.

While the Evian Championship has been claimed by many big-name golfers over the years, no French player had ever accomplished the feat until Boutier. During the final round of the LPGA’s fourth major at the Evian Resort Golf Club, the 29-year-old carded an impressive 3-under 68 to win the title by six shots!

So, how does it feel for the golfer to be the “biggest role model” for up-and-coming players of her country? “I mean, it’s really not things I think about on my daily life. I definitely feel like it’s hard to really realize that I have such — that I would have any kind of impact in French golf or in France at all,” Boutier said during her post-final round presser.

I’m just so grateful to be able to have this gift of golf, I guess, and just to be able to hopefully inspire more French players to turn pro and try to play on the same stage,” she further confessed. Earlier, the Duke University alum had become the most successful French player in LPGA history after winning the Drive On Championship in March. Boutier’s latest major win has made her even more of an iconic figure in the game!

France’s Celine Boutier greatly delighted the crowd presented at the Evian Resort Golf Club on Sunday by winning the Evian Championship, which became an LPGA major in 2013. After rounds of 66-69-67-68, Boutier finished at 14-under 270, six shots ahead of last year’s champion Brooke Henderson.

Henderson finished her 2023 Evian Championship run with an 8-under score. Five more players, which included Nasa Hataoka and Yuka Saso, finished 7-under to share third place. Meanwhile, Scotland’s Gemma Dryburgh carded her best result in an LPGA major as a final round 69 helped her finish eighth on the leaderboard.

Boutier, who had never finished better than 29th in her previous six appearances at the major, was showered in champagne by fellow compatriots after her victory. She also took home $1,000,000 in winnings from the $6.5 million purse! Henderson settled for $585,967 in earnings for her solo second-place finish.
