The $9 M AIG Women’s Open started on a great note yesterday. In their quest to claim the top spot on the leaderboard during the season’s final ladies’ major, golfers gave their all. However, there was one golfer who astounded fans with her unexpected actions, leaving them feeling puzzled.

Having been making her 43rd consecutive appearance in the championship, the LPGA star withdrew her name from the competition in the first round itself. After playing for a few holes, she left her team and didn’t look back. But what exactly happened on the course that led her to withdraw her name from the ongoing tournament?

In the opening round, as other golfers were striving to accumulate birdies, Davies found herself falling short. She experienced a challenging start to her game, with three consecutive bogeys. Adding to her dismay, the Skysports commentator and analyst regretfully observed that she ended up doubling her bogeys on the fourth hole.

Moving on to the fifth hole, she faced another unsuccessful attempt at scoring a birdie. Instead, she ended up with a bogey. However, it was on the sixth hole that she reached her breaking point. Sadly, the 20-time LPGA Tour winner tripled the par-5 6th hole, adding to her disappointment.

Davies ultimately chose to abandon the tournament at that point. It was her last hole before departing from her playing companions Sarah Schmelzel and amateur Chiara Horder. Fans must also know that at the start of the week, Davies also admitted that this might be her last week of playing. And then she left the event halfway. Golf Magic took to Twitter to inform the world of her halfway exit.

Seeing the 59-year-old golfer withdraw from the match after a challenging beginning must have been disheartening for fans. This is especially poignant considering her past victory in the same competition back in 1986 before the event became co-sanctioned with the LPGA Tour.

A sneak peek into the ongoing AIG Women’s Open Championship

Ally Ewing emerged as the leader of the AIG Women’s Open Championship after a strong opening round, finishing at the top of the leaderboard with an impressive 4-under par. Her standout moment came with an eagle on the 16th hole, propelling her to the front.

On the other hand, renowned golfers like Charley Hull failed to make a mark, as they fell short of securing a spot in the top 10 positions. The tournament is still underway and anyone can lead the victory after the final round.
