Did Lexi Thompson make the right call by putting her Olympic dreams aside for personal goals?

What else, if not a golfer? What else, if not an athlete? Don’t worry; Lexi Thompson has the solution to all your problems. Well, that is only if you are an aunt or a godmother to your sibling’s child. The professional had, back in December 2023, welcomed her nephew, Maverick Cole Thompson, into the family. And now, the 29-year-old seems to have turned to her adorable godson once again amid the chaos of retirement.

The professional back in May had announced her intention to retire from the sport by the end of the 2024 season. Consequently, this also means she put a stop to her Olympic dreams as well. Case in point: Thompson reshared a story on her Instagram handle expressing her excitement about spending time with her nephew, all the while posting a picture of her brother and his son with the caption, “Love me some Mav time.”

The golfer reposted her brother Curtis Thompson’s Instagram story, which showcased a ‘cute’ gratitude of sorts from her nephew and his dad for watching him. “Thanks, Auntie for watching me today and learning how to do bath/bed-time with me,” wrote the LPGA Tour Pro’s sibling as though it were coming from the baby’s POV.

That’s not all. He also went ahead to rate (again from the baby’s POV) the bath his baby had that day. “Bath rating for dad,” captioned Lexi Thompson’s brother, “perfect temp, not wet enough head before wash, left one arm out in towel wrap, perfect execution on rash cream and outfit change. Rating 7.8/10.” It is truly an adorable sight, one must say.

The 1-time major champ, meanwhile, had failed to earn a spot at the 2024 Paris Games owing to her position being outside the top 15. Thompson is currently placed at No. 40 on the Rolex rankings, courtesy of the three top-10 finishes the pro raked in alongside the five missed cuts from the 13 starts she made. And with her retirement, it appears she will stop her record of appearances at 2.

Lexi Thompson and her numbers at the Olympics

The golfer has participated in the quadrennial games a total of two times, back in 2016 at Rio de Janeiro and in 2021 at the [2020] Tokyo Olympics. However, she could only finish T19 in Brazil while placing T33 in Japan at the Women’s Individual Stroke Play event. Interestingly, Thompson had scored a figure of 281 in both tournaments while finishing differently in the two cases.

Have an interesting take?

Even though the 29-year-old LPGA Tour pro announced her retirement this year, she would surely be feeling a bit sad about not being able to represent her country for one last time. Lexi Thompson had, back in 2021, mentioned how honored she felt to earn a spot on the U.S. team for the prestigious event. Had she not decided to say goodbye to the sport, then she would have been able to work towards making the next Olympics, the same event that she once dubbed “one of my (sic) top goals.”
