Just before Carlota Ciganda, Lydia Ko faced the penalty for not paying properly during the 2023 Dana Open. She was given a whopping seven-stroke penalty. Now in France, Ciganda was being given a 2-stroke penalty for sluggish play, but she refused to accept it and hence was disqualified from the major tournament.

The golfer posted a story, which was on her Instagram for only a few hours, giving clarification about her decision not to sign the scorecard. She said that she did not do so because she did not believe that she took 52 seconds to hit the putt, as claimed by the Rules Official. She wrote, “I had 10 footer on the last hole, last put, and the group behind they were not even on the tee on a par 5.” Calling out the LPGA, she said that the Tour displayed poor judgment on its end and did not understand “What professional golf is about.”

She lashed out and stated that the officials look at their stopwatches and act as if 20 seconds will make a difference. She also said that she had her friends and family watching her, and they also mentioned that she did not take that long to hit the putt. Ciganda then claimed that the authorities should treat everyone on the course equally and not pick on the same players every time.

Why was Carlota Ciganda disqualified from the Amundi Evian Championship?

The scorecard keeper admonished Ciganda and her group, composed of Anna Nordqvist and Celine Herbin, for their sluggish play through the seventh hole. On the ninth hole, Ciganda’s shot and slow play promoted a two-stroke penalty against her according to the LPGA Tour’s Pace of Play Policy.

The golfer was given permission to appeal in front of the authorities before she had to return her scorecard. The 33-year-old’s appeal was heard and then denied. She was informed that, as per the rules, if she leaves the appeal without signing the card and her actual score is not lower than the actual score, she will be disqualified from the championship. Ciganda held her ground firmly and was disqualified from the Evian Amundi Championship.
