The LPGA Tour had its share of drama and controversy in 2023. The year was nothing short of a breakthrough year for female golf in many aspects, such as prize money. We have witnessed some amazing things, such as the first time Pebble Beach Golf Links hosted the U.S. Women’s Open. But not everything was pleasant.

The world’s best female golfers faced challenges both on and off the course. Here are three of the most controversial moments that made headlines and sparked debates among fans and peers alike.

Lydia Ko had a nightmare finish at the Dana Opеn in July when she was assessed seven penalty shots for playing wrong. It happened on the 11th hole when a rules official was informed that Ko had preferred her lie on Nos. 3, 7, and 9. On holes 3, 7, and 9, she did not return the ball to its original position. Therefore, Ko played from the wrong spot on each of those holes, a violation of Rule 14.7a. Her scorecard was adjusted with penalties.

Later, the 26-year-old posted a story on her Instagram, where she wrote, “What happened last Sunday was definitely not one of my smartest moments. But I completely own my mistake, and while it is frustrating, the 7-stroke penalty I received was justified as I incorrectly played preferred lies on holes I was not meant to.”

2. LPGA Tour’s lack of locker room access at the tournament

The LPGA’s season opener, the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions, was marred by complaints from the players about the lack of locker room access and practice facilities. The players were not allowed to use the locker room and had to change their shoes in the parking lot or in their cars. The situation came to light when Jessica Korda tweeted about the matter, and it came as a shock to many.

One of the most uncomfortable incidents happened at the Solheim Cup. Lexi Thompson had a tense and awkward interview with the SI’s Alex Miceli at the Solheim Cup press conference. On the final hole, a par-5, Thompson had a good chance to make a birdie and earn a point after a great second shot.

However, Leona Maguire chipped in for a birdie, putting more pressure on her. The American golfer mishit her shot and lost the hole. When Miceli asked her about that situation, the 28-year-old looked visibly upset and refused to answer the question.
