One of the biggest challenges of the 2024 season has been a string of injuries and withdrawals that plagued the LPGA Tour. Just look back at the Evian Championship—pros like Ashleigh Buhai and rising stars like Diksha Dagar were forced to withdraw. Now, it seems Jenny Shin has joined the unfortunate list.
August slipped in a moment of time and the LPGA found itself closing the month on the Boston greens. Marina Alex led the way at the inaugural FM Championship, finishing the first round at 4-under par. However, the day didn’t go as well for many LPGA pros, including Jenny Shin. Starting on the 10th hole, she managed four pars and one bogey before her round was cut short. After just six holes, she had to withdraw due to a back injury.
The South Korean national took to her X handle and shared that she will no longer proceed to compete at the TPC Boston and gave a detailed explanation as to what went wrong: “Yesterday morning I strained my left QL muscle and even with the best efforts it didn’t get better this morning. Thought taking inflammatory medications and a good warm up could get me through the round but it just wasn’t getting better through the round. This I’ve made the decision to withdraw and take the rest of the week off. Apologies 🙏🏻”

The QL muscle is the deepest muscle in the lower back. This area is quite important for golfers, as the back powers the rotation of the swing. Another LPGA pro whose back injury has been one of the main hindrances in her professional career is Lilla Vu. The injury had plagued the American pro since 2023, with a recent flare-up forcing her to withdraw from the 2024 Chevron Championship. These injuries haven’t spared anyone, affecting players across both the LPGA and PGA Tours alike.

Hideki Matsuyama kicked off his FedEx Cup playoffs in spectacular fashion with a win at the St. Jude Championship. However, his season took an unfortunate turn when a recurring back injury forced him to withdraw from the BMW Championship. This marked the second consecutive time the Japanese star had to miss this event. At Castle Pines, even world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler witnessed challenges and struggled with stiffness in his back. And then there’s Will Zalatoris, who knows all too well how detrimental back injuries can be for a professional golfer. After a nearly seven-month hiatus in 2023, the one-time PGA Tour winner returned this season but remains on the road to full recovery.
