Ruoning Yin's rise to World No. 1 at 21—what's your take on her incredible journey?

Did you know that Ruoning Yin’s golf journey almost ended before it even began? But how did this even happen? Well, let’s see. There was a swing involved and then some bleeding! It all goes back to when the golfer was tagging along to the driving range with her parents when she was just four years old. Her dad was eager to teach her mom how to swing and warned Yin to wait her turn, however, things didn’t go as planned as the feisty child took matters into her own hands!

While recalling the story in an interview with Golf Digest, the golfer described it as ‘not fun’. “He told me, don’t swing, because I was grabbing a club, and he goes, don’t swing”, said Yin. So, you know how we all have grown up getting told that we should listen to our parents well if only the golfer had listened to hers because Yin took a swing anyway hitting her dad’s head and sending him to the hospital for four stitches “I did one swing anyway, and I just hit his head and he got I think four stitches”, she said.

Needless to say, it wasn’t a fun experience and it kept Yin away from golf until she was 10 and a half. It wasn’t until her mom made a little deal with the golfer and told her to try a summer golf camp in China and then she’d get to see a movie. That got Yin to give the sport another chance and it didn’t even take her long to get back into her old form after her competitive fire was back. Three months later during her first tournament, which was a 27-hole event the little golfer stunned herself and everyone with a third-place finish.

Ruoning Yin’s decorated golf career

You might not know this, but Ruoning Yin had bagged the bronze position for the Chinese National team at the 2018 Asian Games. She was just 16 then! She went pro the very next year and it all just worked out for her after that. It was like she was destined to become a golfer as the golfer was seen dominating the China LPGA Tour with three consecutive wins and making a new record, altogether. Then the inevitable happened in 2023 when Yin absolutely crushed it after snagging her first LPGA Tour title at the DIO Implant LA Open.

But that wasn’t even the real showstopper as the golfer went on to win the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship with an amazing birdie on the 72nd hole! She then became the second Chinese golfer to take home a Major title and if that wasn’t crazy enough Yin also reached World No. 1 in September 2023, when she was only 21 years old!
