The Rory McIlroy ‘driveway incident’ has found its place among the Ryder Cup lore, of which there are quite a few. A week ago, the flare-up between the Northern Irish golfer and Joe LaCava and later Jim Mackay became the talk of the town. Although the golf world has since moved on from it, one person is yet to forget that.

McIlroy is also famous (or infamous, depending on which side you’re on) for his aversion towards LIV golf and the golfers who chose to flip sides. That has certainly made him unpopular among many LIV backers. Commenting on a video of that incident, one LIV golfer’s wife said she wished the brawl would’ve gotten further. She claimed that she wanted to see the current world No. 2 “punched in the face”!

A quick recapitulation first. The Ryder Cup was almost dying after the first day of bravado by the Europeans. The second day of fracas, both on and off the course, added more spices than anyone bargained for. First, a report shed some light on the ‘hatless’ controversy, which prompted the European fans to mock Patrick Cantlay by waving their hats.

The USA team responded in kind after Cantlay fluttered off three birdies on the last three holes, cutting the point deficit to five. Apparently, the first shot of an upcoming feud was taken there. McIlroy asked Cantlay’s caddie, Joe LaCava, to move before taking his own putt. But Tiger Woods’ former caddie was too busy stomping the ground to care.

It seemed to have stopped there, until it didn’t. The heat spilled over to the driveway, where, in a now viral clip, a fired-up McIlroy was seen pointing towards someone out of the frame before his teammate Shane Lowry held him back.

A week has already passed, with the dust slowly receding to the back of people’s minds. However, Ashley Perez, the wife of LIV golfer Pat Perez, is not happy that Lowry held his teammate back. Under the clip on Instagram, she left a comment, “I can’t possibly be the only one that would absolutely love to watch Rory get punched in the face.” Adding a tinge of sarcasm to spice it up, she added, “I mean in the nicest way possible.”

McIlroy has earlier spoken against golfers who have jumped ship. Pat Perez was one of the lesser-known golfers to make the switch, and his wife has always been extremely defensive of her husband’s move.

However, this wasn’t the first time she has garnered the spotlight for her rather odd takes. Earlier, she shocked everyone by making fun of Tiger Woods’ 2021 car accident. Incidentally, the 15x Major winner has also spoken against LIV golf.

Ashley Perez did not feel any sympathy for Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods suffered a devastating accident in 2021 when his car flipped several times. The 47-year-old golfer sustained injuries on both his legs—a shattered ankle and a compound fracture—which kept him out of the greens for a long period of time.

At that time, commenting under a video of Woods recovering, she wrote, “Literally why driving under the influence is ILLEGAL; I don’t feel bad for him. Thank God he didn’t kill anyone.” Although there was no report of Woods being under the influence during the incident, Perez was not having it.

Ashely Perez doesn’t mince words. McIlroy, too, rarely spares any fellow LIV-backers for pledging allegiance to the Saudi-backed league. Now, with Perez’s comment, it seems their feelings are mutual.
