Ever since the bombshell announcement of the PGA Tour and LIV Golf merger, retired golfer Gary Player has been under a lot of scrutiny from the media and fellow golfers for his stance on the decision. However, that does not discourage the South African Pro from sharing his encouragement and good wishes with budding players in the golfing community.

Gary Player congratulates the Amateur Championship winner

One of the legends who carved a name for himself in golfing history, Gary Player, is a standup guy with a love for the sport that extends beyond his personal accomplishments. And that’s saying something.

The retired veteran won nine championships on the Championship Tour during his reign and another 9 major championships on the PGA Tour. The 87-year-old retiree has a lot more accolades to his name and deserves his place among the GOATs of Golf.

Although some people in the golfing world may perceive him as an entitled man, Gary remains grounded when it comes to the progressive nature of the golfing association. He is always appreciative of new faces on the course and often keeps up with the accomplishments of potentially great players in the amateur rounds.

One such instance happened recently when the South African rookie, Christo Lamprecht, took home the title at the Amateur Championship hosted in the United Kingdom. The event that has sprouted two consecutive winners from South Africa drew the attention of the retired veteran pro golfer. He shared his appreciation of Lamprecht’s gameplay on his official Instagram account.

After congratulating the winner on his much-deserved victory, Player also shared a few words of wisdom. “Remember this feeling and strive to work even harder. I look forward to shaking your hand at Royal Liverpool.”

Being a South African Pro Golfer himself, it is highly plausible that the veteran golfer feels proud of Christo for more than one reason. His post demonstrates how closely he follows the events in the golfing world, even at his advanced age.

South African golfers are winning big on the Amateur circuit

Christo Lamprecht’s recent win is a follow-up to yet another extraordinary talent from Gary Player’s home country. Last year, Aldrich Potgeiter set the record for being the second youngest golfer to win the British Amateur Championship. Recently, Potgeiter, who is also a South African native, decided to join the Professional Golfing circuit. With his debut, he made one cut out of the four games that he played.

Gary Player recognizing Lamprecht’s potential may go a long way toward introducing the amateur golfer to the worldwide community of professionals. If nothing else, Christo Lamprecht must be over the moon for the personal felicitations from such an esteemed celebrity in the golfing community.
