Steve Williams was Tiger Woods’ caddie for a long time. The duo was together from 1999 to 2011; an era when Tiger was deemed unbeatable. They have won 13 major championships together, including three green jackets. However, in 1999, when Steve joined Woods as a caddie, he once called Tiger overrated during a tournament.

Not to mention, his judgment was wrong was as Tiger has gone on to win 82 PGA Tours and 15 major championships so far. Speaking in a podcast as a guest, Steve opened up on his comments. He talked about the time Woods hit one of the worst golf shots in professional golf at the 1999 Arnold Palmer Invitational.

“A good week for him was just winning a golf tournament, and I knew straight away,” revealed Williams. “We didn’t get off to a great start at Bay Hill. He hit one of the worst golf shots I’ve ever seen in my life from a golf pro. We joked about that for a long time. I think he finished about 55th at that tournament. I said, ‘Man, you’re seriously overrated’.”

“It was on the 13th hole at Bay Hill,” said Steve. “It’s a lay-up off the tee, and there’s a ravine going across, and it’s a very narrow green. It’s a very easy hole, and he hit a wedge from the middle of the fairway, and it not only missed the green, but it missed the bunker. It was about 30 yards left.”
Hence, after seeing this shot, Williams called Woods overrated. Moreover, the duo even had a joke about the situation that if they don’t improve, he will be working at TW’s car wash. Notably, Tiger Woods went on to finish 56th that week in 1999. However, he won the same event at Bay Hill eight times in the future and created history.
