The CEO of LIV Golf, Greg Norman, has been trying hard to get his players the right to play at the Masters. And now, the latest comments by Cameron Smith have stirred things up. The golfers who left the PGA tour and joined the Saudi-backed circuit. They barred them from playing any PGA event or major tournament. However, LIV defectors are not allowed to have OWGR points. 

However, Norman said in earlier comments that he has been trying to reach out to the PGA’s commissioner but has yet to be successful. Therefore, Smith has risen like hope to all the LIV golfers. And his comments on the championship have left people wondering if barring the players from majors was correct. Let’s find out what he said about Major tournaments and LIV players.

Is Cameron Smith standing up for his fellow golfers?

The Open Championship winner, Smith, believes there should be no partiality in any major tournaments. They should take an unbiased approach toward all the golfers, and it shouldn’t be like politics. Majors should not take anyone’s side and treat both tours equally. He said, “I think the majors really have to stand above all the politics.” Defending himself and other LIV defectors, he added that they all are talented players.

And if the authorities want the best products and the best players competing against each other, they have to let the LIV players play at major tournaments. However, being on a different circuit does not justify the idea of not letting them be part of any majors. “If they really want the best product and the best players playing against each other in the world, they have to let us play,” said the 2022 Players Championship winner. 

After winning the 150th Open at St. Andrews this July, Smith received an exemption from the majors for the next five years. He was in a unique position from all the other golfers. Therefore, it is unsurprising that a former PGA member wants all his fellow LIV players to be part of the Majors. However, according to Watson, he really wants to be part of major events and he was praying for the authorities to make the right decision.

The highest-ranked player of LIV believes that the legacy of majors will be weakened. According to him, if no LIV players are allowed to be part of majors, it can be a problem. However, he explained his claim with facts. He said that the LIV’s 48-player roster has many players that would suffice for eligibility for the majors.

LIV golfers have won 12 of the past 26 majors, which include old champions like Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, and Patrick Reed and new champions like Bryson DeChambeau. Therefore, their roots will not strengthen if they separate these skilled golfers from the majors.
