The very recent verdict from OWGR against LIV Golf’s plea for changes in the ranking system could not have had a positive impact on the LIV golfers. This would apply particularly to Bryson DeChambeau who has voiced out the most, against the unfair impact of the current OWGR system on LIV golfers.

The Scientist had achieved a remarkable 58 in a round at the LIV Greenbrier a few months back. Well, he might just create a similar or even better magic at the Jeddah event, considering the current circumstances. Speaking of Greenbrier, Bryson DeChambeau spoke reminiscently of his father and expressed his love and gratitude for his mother at the event. Who are his parents and what do we know of them?

Bryson DeChambeau was born on 16th September 1993, in California, to Jan and Jon DeCheambeau. (Yes, they rhyme. We noticed.)

While he received his degree in business from the University of Arizona, the late Jon DeChambeau played collegiate golf at the beginning of the 80’s. He got busy with amateur golf events in Northern California during the 70s and the 80s. In the late 80s, he played in a few PGA Tour events as well.

Jan Druffel DeChambeau, reportedly worked in the sales department of a mattress-selling company around 2015. However, there is no clear information on her current employment status. We, curiously, looked up her name on Instagram, and she did have a public profile. She has shared some pictures and videos of her family. It’s a neat little profile with very few posts.

It’s quite sad that Jon suffered from ill health during his last few years. To say that Jon DeChambeau had health issues would be an understatement. He went through quite a lot, in his last decade or so.

Jon DeChambeau’s health issues

He had a severe case of diabetes since the 90s. Around 2014, both his kidneys gave up, and for the next three to four years he struggled hard. In 2015, destiny led the older DeChambeau to meet up with a high school golf partner, that had drifted apart almost three decades ago.

This serendipitous meeting happened at one of Bryson’s tournaments. And Ron Bankofier, Jon’s good old friend donated a kidney to him. Later, in 2016, Jon was able to witness the grand debut of his son at the Masters.

Although his leg had to be amputated around 2017, Jon was able to follow his son’s career growth for the next few years. His biggest fear before the kidney transplant was that he might miss out on the peak moments of his son’s career. While there might be many more still left, he was able to at least be present for many of them.

Jon passed away in November 2022. Bryson wrote an emotional note to his dad while announcing the sad news.

In August 2023, when his overwhelming 58 was creating a buzz, Bryson spoke about his family. He sounded quite moved.

After his incredible 58, Bryson was asked about his father and was told that he would be proud of his son. The Scientist eagerly agreed. He said his father was with him all day that day. He admitted how the past couple of years have been rough on him.

He thanked his mom, dad, and older brother Garrett, for all they taught him. He didn’t forget to make a special mention of his mother.

“I love you, mom. You are the best person that I could have imagined parenting me and teaching me all the life lessons growing up.” He added that he could not imagine someone else pulling this off. He further reiterated his love for her as he concluded his note of thanks.

Let’s talk about his mom a bit more, shall we?

Jan DeChambeau speaks of her son

In an interview with Golf Digest, in 2015, Jan explained how more than courage, stubbornness drove Bryson DeChambeau toward his decisions. She said that once he was convinced of something it was difficult to convince him otherwise.

“He’s steadfast,” she said. “He gets that from his father. That old Dutch streak.” She also described him as unusually focused and fastidious as a child.

A cute little family they are, aren’t they? We hope that Jon DeChambeau continues to enjoy his son’s game from wherever he is. And we also hope Bryson DeChambeau gives us all and his dad high points after high points in his career!
