Is Tyrrell Hatton's fiery passion a strength or a liability on the golf course?

Tyrrell Hatton is known to be a very passionate pro of the game. The 33-year-old gives it his all to ensure he achieves the best result. The Englishman doesn’t shy away from conveying his feelings verbally and he is also often seen expressing his emotions on course after a poorly or well-hit stroke.

So there was no doubt we would witness him react to a badly hit stroke on the 14th hole at the ongoing DP World Tour Championship 2024. Hatton can be seen driving from the fairway in the 3rd round as he went a tad bit to the left of the green. After the motion of play, he saw where the ball was heading and brought his club back down to push it against the ground and break it in half.

As the ball was landing on the outskirts of the green, we could hear Ewen Murray saying, “It’s time for a change I’m afraid.” Criticizing Hatton for his actions, the golf commentator added, “That’s a terrible influence on the next generation. I’m sorry to say it, I’m his biggest supporter. We’ve all had our moments but he’s having too many of them,” as he pointed out the frequency of misconduct from the pro is getting a bit concerning.

The video of the incident was posted by @flushingitgolf on their X account. It showcased the entire incident including the commentary by Ewen Murray.

While fans understand that Hatton is a passionate player and they love him for it, they would also have to agree with Ewen’s comments. Hatton has been a bit too aggressive for his own liking recently. We saw a glimpse of it in the 2nd round of the tournament when Hatton expressed his utter dislike for the 18th hole on this course. His conversation with his caddie was picked up as he was approaching the last few strokes on the first day. The bit was shared by @jamierkennedy on their X account.

Tyrrell Hatton said, “It’s absolutely tragic. I despise everything about this hole. Having to hit 9-iron after hitting a good tee shot, shows how bad it is.”, as he stated how ridiculously challenging the hole is. And it stands true as there is an entire piece written by Worldwide Golf titled ‘How to play the 18th…’ on the Jumeirah Golf Estates Earth Course. Coming back to the first day of the DP World Tour Championship 2024, Hatton’s caddie replied, “Just hit a good line. Right centre.”, as he tried to get his boss to stay focused. But Hatton again said, “It’s so ridiculous. Everything about this hole I despise!”

Have an interesting take?

While misconduct is never to be justified, there is no doubt that Hatton only reacts when things seriously go wrong. It is still disheartening to see such a great player take this path as he has been in great form recently. So how is the Englishman performing in the tournament so far? Let’s find out.

Performance of Tyrrell Hatton at DPWT championship 2024

The first two days have been quite good for the 33-year-old Tyrrell Hatton. He has gone neck-and-neck with tournament favorite, Rory McIlroy on Thursday and Friday. Both the individuals have scored 67-69 to end round two at -8 at the top of the table.

However, the penultimate round has been more in favor of McIlroy. Hatton has fallen down the order as he is placed at 6th with a score of -9. McIlroy has maintained his top spot tied with Rasmus Højgaard and Antoine Rozner with a score of -12. Hatton will be looking to get back on track on the final day of the event on Sunday, November 17 as he looks to win another title in 2024.
