Athletes endorsing political candidates is a topic that’s been debated for ages, and Bryson DeChambeau’s recent support for Donald Trump has only added fuel to the fire. Some people appreciate the willingness of Bryson DeChambeau to express his views, while others question whether athletes should stay out of politics altogether. DeChambeau’s involvement with Trump doesn’t come off as a surprise as well when he wore a “Make America Great Again” hat when they played golf together.
This move has drawn both praise and criticism, highlighting the complexities of athletes in politics. Many believe it’s essential to recognize that athletes are citizens too, with the right to free speech and expression. They can influence public opinion, especially when it comes to issues that matter to their fans.
Recently, golfing sensation Talor Gooch also took to Instagram to share his views on the matter and posted a picture of his family having fun in Disneyland. “Making memories 🙌 @eallygooch”, read the caption but that is what caught the fans’ attention. Gooch was wearing a red hat with Trump written over it, which spoke volumes to the fans, and while many fans were supportive, some were not.

However, there’s also the argument that athletes should focus on their sport rather than politics. Some fans might feel that their favorite athletes are crossing a line by endorsing candidates or expressing political views. Recently, Rory McIlroy also expressed his thoughts on the matter but with a slight twist.

We all know how the PGA Tour-LIV merger has been facing one delay after another, and now Rory McIlroy thinks Donald Trump’s return to the presidency could be the catalyst to finally get the deal done. McIlroy believes Trump’s relationship with Saudi Arabia and his love for golf could be beneficial in resolving the issue. This is interesting, considering the PGA Tour and LIV Golf have been in negotiations since announcing a framework agreement in June 2023, but a complete resolution remains elusive. “Yeah, I think from the outside looking in, it’s probably a little less complicated than it actually is. But obviously, Trump has a great relationship with Saudi Arabia. He’s got a great relationship with golf. He’s a lover of golf. So, maybe. Who knows?”, he said, per CNN.
What’s your perspective on:
Should athletes like DeChambeau and Gooch stick to sports, or is their political voice important?

McIlroy also expressed his admiration for Elon Musk, calling him “the smartest man in the world,” and suggested that since Trump is having Musk involved, it could also help facilitate the deal. “He might be able to. He’s got Elon Musk, who I think is the smartest man in the world, beside him. We might be able to do something if we can get Musk involved, too”. However, we all know it’s not as easy as it sounds. Having a merger would mean that the golf world is unified which, honestly, still sounds like a dream. Still, do you think Trump is the person who can finally put an end to this?
