Is Tyrrell Hatton's move to LIV Golf a game-changer or a career risk? What do you think?

“I deleted Twitter. I think that’s too negative for me,” said a disheartened Tyrrell Hatton just before making the big jump to LIV Golf. Maybe he knew what would follow once he made the choice to join the league. Maybe he had inferred this from the various experiences that the other defectors went through. But now, six months after his jump, the golfer, dubbed a ‘hothead’ on the course, appears to be at ease with the change in circuits. Seems ironic, doesn’t it?

The golfer was spotted in an interview after the final round of the LIV Golf event in the UK. With three more events remaining on the 2024 calendar, the athlete was asked how he felt about joining the breakaway circuit. His reply? Well, he couldn’t help but dub the whole situation as nothing short of “fun.”

“I think it’s been a fun year,” admitted the Englishman as he alluded to his year at LIV Golf before expressing how fortunate it was to travel around the world and enjoy the experience as a team. Hatton then recounted the 19-under he scored at Nashville which helped him win his first title since the 2021 Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, “As an individual, for me to win in Nashville last month was a huge relief just to win again as a professional because it had been such a long time.”

He also pointed out how exciting it was to play at The Grove amid the huge attendance at the event. “I think it was the best turnout attendance-wise for LIV in the U.S.,” said the golfer, “so it was fun to play a tournament that had a really good atmosphere.” Interestingly, more than 40,000 fans attended the tournament on Saturday and Sunday, making it the highest-attended LIV Golf event in America.

Nevertheless, the 32-year-old Hatton was still hopeful of the PIF-funded circuit reaching bigger heights. “I think we’ll see more and more fans coming to tournaments and creating a fun atmosphere for us players to play in,” said the athlete as he put on his prediction hats, “We want a good atmosphere, and the crowds this week really were fantastic… It’s fun to be a part of.” The tournament in the UK also saw many fans attending the event. The contest had, before it even kicked off, sold out all tickets and full three-day passes, both ground and premium hospitality.

Have an interesting take?

Well, the situation doesn’t seem so bleak now for the Saudi-backed league. Moreover, Tyrrell Hatton might probably be breathing a sigh of relief right about now, especially after facing such immense backlash for his LIV Golf jump.

Hatton’s LIV Golf move caused him to delete social media

“I actually deleted my social media because I knew that there was going to be negativity,” divulged Hatton while alluding to the chaos that came after him joining Legion XIII GC. “I just didn’t want any of that judgment and negativity in front of me. So I deleted that and it’s been quite nice actually.” What made it all the worse might have been the fact that his defection came after Jon Rahm’s, the golfer who was the No. 3 on the OWGR back then.

What made him join in the end was the allure of playing golf as a team with Rahm, on a global schedule with immense money on offer. Although he did admit it was hard with the LIV Golf League not receiving any OWGR backing, Tyrrell Hatton conveyed how he had no regrets about his decision. Regardless of his hopes, will the circuit actually grow in the future? That is something that the fans can only wait and watch!
