“Spanish golfers are famously known for their touch around the green”, Sergio Garcia said recently in a video. It’s true though. Legends like Seve Ballesteros and Jose Maria Olazabal were popular for their putting prowess.
Sergio Garcia himself is quite famous for his putting skills. However, Garcia is also famous for another reason involving the green, in addition to his putting. And as he put out a video discussing putting tech hours ago, fans harshly reminded him of an embarrassing incident.

Sergio Garcia’s recent tweet spoke about PuttView X, a tech that allows the player to visualize the ideal path from ball to hole. The special glasses create a simulated route for the player to pursue. Demonstrating a putt wearing the headgear that comes with the glasses, Garcia shared a video on his Twitter handle.
The comments flooded in, calling him out for spitting on the hole once, years ago. One fan wrote “Touch around the green? Does that include spitting into the cup?” Another fan took it further and asked, “Does it show where to spit so it goes right into the cup?” And now let’s look at the rudest comment which said, “Try spitting in the cup or acting like a cry baby like you always do.”
For the unversed, Sergio Garcia once spit into the cup at a hole. It was not the spitting alone that made the incident infamous. Other golfers, including Tiger Woods, have done this too, besides Garcia.

The highlight of Garcia’s incident was when he gave an awkward response when asked about it. For anyone who knows of the incident, it would probably be the most vivid memory of the Spanish veteran that they carry.
What were the reasons that made Garcia spit into the hole, and what explanation he gave for his action?
The infamous spitting incident
Imagine a young lanky Sergio Garcia, who is about to putt from a reasonably close spot on the green. It’s a putt anyone would be sure Garcia would make, and he probably was, too. But the ball gets slightly deviated and stops inches near the hole.
Garcia walks up to the ball and with possible frustration, pushes it in. And after he bent down to pick up the ball, he spit into the cup. This was obviously on camera, and a journalist later asked him about it. The Spaniard had an amusing response to it. He insisted that it was not a big deal, and it wasn’t a proper spit. He claimed that he just let it come down.

Then, when he was reminded of how other players might have to pick their balls from the hole later, he had a really peculiar comeback. He said, “Don’t worry. It did go in the middle. It wasn’t gonna affect anybody. I noticed that.”

You could see how young he was in the video, and he probably just got nervous talking about it. That doesn’t make the incident any less hilarious, though.
