Australian golfer Cam Smith has had a great time since he joined the LIV Golf Series last year. He won two competitions this year, including the LIV Bedminster and the 2023 LIV Golf London event. Since the Saudi-backed circuit is the most lucrative, he earned $4 million in both tournaments.

The golfer’s victory does not, however, just entail large winnings. The competitions give people an opportunity to advance and establish themselves among the elite. Because of this, it becomes crucial for many golfers to succeed in the competition. But despite earning $15,248,846 from the LIV events this year, Smith has a profound reason to be upset.

Cam Smith’s wins are not rewarding him

The goal of many golfers is to be ranked as the best in the world. Despite providing its players with financial security, LIV Golf is unable to provide OWGR points. No matter how well they perform in the league, LIV golfers always struggle to move up the standings.

It seems like Cam Smith has abandoned the pursuit. He was the No. 2 golfer last year when he won the 2022 Open Championship. But after that, his ranks plummeted, even though he was performing well. Though he is not behind the pursuit anymore, the loss of OWGR still upsets him.

Smith reflected on the position he is in right now and said his current 12th rank is all due to his performances in majors. ”I didn’t win a major this year but I had a fourth and eighth and ninth in there as well, so a pretty solid major season. If I didn’t play well in those four events, I think you’d find me way outside where I am at the moment.” said the 30-year-old golfer. “I don’t think it’s a very accurate reflection of where I’m at the moment, but that’s just the way it is.”

But why is it not possible for LIV Golf to award its players with OWGR points?

The reason behind the absence of OWGR from LIV events

The Official World Golf Ranking published a list of 20 tours that will start receiving significant points in December 2022. LIV Golf, though, was not included. Among others, the biggest reason behind this is pretty straightforward – The Greg Norman-led tour has a no-cut policy.

The OWGR’s list of tours all adhere to the conventional cut-line rule. The PGA Tour and many others typically use a 72-hole format, but the Saudi-funded Tour uses a 54-hole format.

Despite their differences, the biggest shock was the announcement of a merger between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf. Perhaps in the future, this will assist LIV golfers in gaining OWGR points.
