Viktor Hovland has become the talk of the town! The PGA Tour pro was rumored to be one of the players soon moving towards LIV Golf. He last played at The Sentry 2024 in Hawaii where he secured a tied 22nd finish. Since then he has not participated in any PGA Tour events. While this may point towards him joining the rival league, the Norwegian golfer has something else on his mind. He is most definitely looking for a change, but not the one fans think!

‘Flushing It’ reported, “There’s rumours that Viktor Hovland is heading to LIV and that is NOT happening, for now at least. It’s been confirmed recently by the man himself.”

“But, Espen also has confirmation from Viktor that he is now working with a new coach, Grant Waite. They had an initial meeting in Florida after The Sentry, and have worked together for a couple of weeks now. Viktor has had a perfect natural progression over the last few years, and hopefully this coaching change will see that continue. Could it be a major winning season??”

The 26-year-old ended his partnership with ‘TrackMan Maestro’ Joe Mayo at the end of 2023. It was a season that saw him become the FedEx Cup champion for the first time in his career. The golfer did not get into the details of what led to this decision. However, he had former PGA Tour player Grant Waite on board now. He is considered one of the best golf coaches and has worked with Charles Howell III. But what’s so interesting about this? Well, Howell was Hovland’s mentor when he burst into the golf scene in 2019.

Waite and Hovland reportedly met in Florida after Hovland’s disappointing 2024 start in The Sentry and discussed future plans. While his disengagement from Mayo was heavily criticized, the Norwegian golfer’s new coach is definitely an upgrade.

All about Hovland’s new coach: The 1993 Kemper Open winner

Waite has been voted as one of the 50 best coaches in the world several times. Furthermore, just like Mayo, Waite’s coaching is built on a lot of mathematics and physics.

As for his professional career, Waite played for 13 years on the PGA Tour. Further, with a 40-foot birdie putt at the 16th hole and an even more astonishing bunker shot at the 18th, the New Zealander claimed the 1993 Kemper Open championship at Avenel. But now he has made his name as one of the most intellectual coaches present. His reputation is on par with Hovland’s last coach, Joe Mayo.

However, many fans believe it would have been good for the 26-year-old to stay in the same school of swing theory with Mayo instead of switching over. And what both Hovland and Mayo have managed to dish out in the 2022-23 season, only a few have achieved. But Waite and Mayo are two sides of the same coin and they have done many coaching seminars together over the years. What Waite and Hovland achieve together, only time will tell.
