“Unfortunately, OWGR has shown little willingness to productively work with us.” – wrote Greg Norman, the CEO of LIV Golf to the players of the breakaway league, including Talor Gooch. The reason? The Saudi-backed circuit finally gave up its bid to gain recognition from the Official World Golf Rankings. Well, enough is enough, and the 32-year-old golfer also agrees.

Gooch took to a new episode of the Flushing It Golf podcast to react to the PIF-funded circuit withdrawing their application. However, during the same, he went ahead to take a jab at the OWGR all the while indicating how it is finally time to “move on!”

Just a day after the news of the withdrawal came out, the LIV Golf Pro took to the episode to mention how, “the only way OWGR works for LIV is if they retroactively award points and don’t deduct points from events for some reason,” as he alluded to the format of the league. Meanwhile, he went ahead to divulge how “it’s not right” as he emphasized how not awarding full points would “screw us(sic) players.”

Additionally, the 2023 season-long Individual champion recounted, “Very few people or organizations have done the right or just thing, in any situation, the last two years.” Therefore, he surmised it improbable that the world-ranking body would also do the same while issuing a jab, “It’s highly unlikely the OWGR would do the right and just thing in this circumstance. Especially considering their choices, behavior, and alliances, etc.” Thus, as a result, he felt the need to leave it all behind as he said, “It’s time to move on.”

Meanwhile, last fall, the world ranking body had turned down the Saudi-backed league’s plea to receive points. They did so stating reasons of technicality basing the decision on the breakaway circuit boasting a different format as opposed to the 72-hole one employed by other events. What’s more, they also stated the problem of there not being enough promotion and relegation of athletes, unlike the other circuits such as the PGA Tour or the Korn Ferry Tour.

Although the OWGR has made it clear their intentions to not let the players from the Norman-led league any recognition, the same wasn’t the case for a golfer on the PGA Tour. Xander Schauffele had recently revealed his admiration of the athletes on the PIF-funded circuit.

Xander Schauffele turns advocate for LIV golfers

The 30-year-old came out in approval of the LIV Golf professionals as he said, “The LIV Tour definitely has really good players.” Adding on, he pointed out how there are so many of the players, who, “are in the top 10 or top 25 in the world” playing in the league. Although they are unranked at the moment, for the PGA Tour pro, “they’re definitely top-ranked players in the world.”

Regardless of the support that was dished out by the American golfer, it doesn’t seem possible for LIV Golf to be awarded points anymore unless and until they follow the criteria set by the OWGR to the dot. However, the different format is one of the aspects that separate it from the PGA Tour. Thus, one can only wait and see what the future would entail for the professionals on the Middle Eastern circuit.
