Moving to LIV Golf was a debatable move for defectors like Brooks Koepka and Phil Mickelson. Although they were heavily compensated with huge paychecks, they have always been on the receiving end of criticism over this decision. And even though a lot of time has passed since and a LIV star, a.k.a. Koepka, against all odds has managed to fulfill his nearly impossible Ryder Cup dreams despite playing for the Saudi league, there are many players for whom he and other defectors are not worthy of doing so!

Among those critics is a golf legend who even served as a prior captain for the Ryder Cup and has expressed his disconnect over LIV Golfers who have chosen to move on. Days before the International Face-Off commences, the golf veteran has gone on to vent out his pent-up feelings about the LIV stars and publicly show that they are “not supported” by him!

English golfer Nick Faldo has seen much success in his golfing career and was also the captain of Team Europe in the 2008 Ryder Cup. Unfortunately, his team lost and the US won by 16½ – 11½ ending Europe’s streak of three successive victories. That year, he had chosen Ian Poulter as his wildcard entry.

Hence, when players like Poulter, Sergio Garcia, and others who were once faithful to the European team jumped ships and joined LIV Golf, Faldo’s feelings were hurt. And it seems like time hasn’t healed those wounds, as he lashes out at all the stars of the new series with regards to their hopes of being included in the Ryder Cup, of which only Koepka made it through.

Recently talking to Golf Monthly, the 6-time major winner said, “These guys have moved on. I think we have one of the strongest teams we have ever had. Those guys have left the Tour and are in a different world now. They have not supported the Tour. They are done.”

Even though Faldo can find compensation in the fact that defectors like Garcia and Poulter haven’t earned a spot in the Ryder Cup this year, he perhaps will fail to get 100% satisfaction as LIV’s Koepka still made it on to the American team and hence will be on the greens in Rome.

The big question remains, though: Why did only one LIV star make it into the prestigious event? And why were none from the European side selected? Well, it may just not be related to the bias that everyone perceives!

The prominent reason why Brooks Koepka is heading to Rome and the European LIV stars aren’t

This year, Sergio Garcia will miss his first Ryder Cup since 2010. And though after resigning from the DP World Tour, he and the others had expressed their desire to play in the Ryder Cup and tried hard till the last moment, they failed to gain admission since they were no longer members of the Tour. But the situation was different with Koepka.

Not only did he flaunt an outstanding performance throughout the season, but he also went on to win one major, the PGA Championship, which further improved his chances of playing in the Cup. Moreover, this relationship with the PGA Tour did not end in the sour manner in which Garcia, Poulter, Westwood, and others broke off with the European Tour. He is still a part of the PGA Tour thanks to the 1-year grace period.

While many may feel that the LIV European stars may have been snubbed when it comes to playing at the international event, there also aren’t a lot of great performances to back these stars, like there is for Koepka, who hence made it into the good books of Zach Johnson and found his place.

This year, Faldo will just have to make peace with the 5-time major winner playing in the Ryder Cup this year. However, whether in the future Ryder Cups his opinions will survive and no LIV golfers will play remains to be seen!
