Phil Mickelson is one of the most respected professional golfers in the world. The golfer is not a stranger to being the man of the hour as he has won more than 50 championships worldwide, including 6 majors. However, did you know that Mickelson once made headlines for something that he wasn’t proud of?
The story goes back to 2015 when Gregory Silveira of La Quinta pleaded guilty to three counts of money laundering of funds from his unnamed gambling client between February 2010 and February 2013. According to reports, the gambling client was Mickelson.

Silveria, a former sports gambling handicapper, pleaded guilty to laundering approximately $2.75 million of money from his unnamed client. Outside the Lines revealed that two sources confirmed that the client was the LIV Golf rebel. Furthermore, they also claimed that they had obtained the documents of the case.
Was Phil Mickelson part of the case?
“Money laundering of funds from P.M.” A reference to the initials P and M was given in the initial agreement signed by the defendant and his attorney. However, after the media started to investigate the initials, the U.S. Attorney’s Office filed a motion to amend the original plea. And “P.M.” was removed from the agreement the next day.

According to the standard Department of Justice policy, the name of the third parties, who haven’t incurred criminal charges, shouldn’t be mentioned in the documents. Furthermore, everybody related to the case denied commenting on the intials “P.M.” or any questions related to it.
Other than the two sources of Outside the Lines and the initials, no other links pointed towards Mickelson. Notably, neither the golfer nor his attorney responded to the media’s questions regarding the matter.
Mickelson admitted to gambling
According to Celebrity Net Worth, Phil Mickelson has a net worth of $300 million in 2022. However, Alan Shipnuck recently revealed that he lost nearly $40 million in four years from gambling, considerably reducing his net worth. Shipnuck is the author of Mickelson’s biography.

“My gambling got to a point of being reckless and embarrassing.” Mickelson addressed the allegations and agreed that he did indeed indulge in gambling and he sought help from professionals for it. “It isn’t a threat to me or my financial security,” Lefty stated, disagreeing with Shipnuck’s claims.
The media alleged that Mickelson was the unnamed client in the money laundering case regarding Gregory Silveira. Reportedly, two sources revealed he was the client of the defendant. However, no solid proof could connect the golfer to the accused.
