Phil Mickelson calls cell phones a distraction

Yes, you got it right. The object under scrutiny is after all a cell phone. What may seem like a basic necessity at this point, according to pro golfers, is indeed a problem.

After a 2011 rule change, fans are allowed to have cell phones on the golf course. However, the Masters remain to be an exception to this change of rule. This change is being called out by the LIV rebel Phil Mickelson as a major distraction from the sport.

Gone are the days when the players were at ease and could play the game without being distracted from the game by fans and their cell phones. But isn’t it ironic that to lodge this complaint about a cell phone, Mickelson himself had to use a cell phone? Mickelson said that he dropped a “text” message to PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem from the golf course.

This leads us to think whether the essential nature of cell phones makes it impossible for the fans to leave them behind during a game. So, what if, instead of asking for a ban on the usage, we strive towards regulating the use of the said devices?

But is Phil the only player who faced this problem?

Even though there is a flip side to Phil’s contention against the use of cell phones, he is not alone in his objection. Many players seem to have a problem with the device being used at the course. These said players include names of world-renowned golfers, like Tiger Woods and Tom Watson.

Tom Watson even said, “When they make these marquee pairings, more people are going to follow them and more people want to take pictures. So it makes it very difficult. Ever since they made that rule that cell phones are allowed, it’s just not fun playing.”

Therefore, a balance has to be made between the player’s problems and the fan’s fundamentals.
