Ever since Paul Azinger lit up a spark on the closing night of the Ryder Cup 2023, a fire has been ablaze. Which fire are we referring to? The fire of excitement and curiosity after hearing about the possibility of Tiger Woods being the next Ryder Cup Captain.

Well, as Azinger himself pointed out, two years is a long time, and plenty can change by that time. However, we still dug into the likelihood of this happening. Azinger not only mentioned Tiger Woods but also brought up Sergio Garcia in the discussion amped up the existing hype for a Woods-led US squad in 2025.

How likely is it for Tiger Woods to be the Ryder Cup 2025 US Team’s Captain?

There are two major aspects that have determined the Ryder Cup Captains in the past few years (and probably even before that). One is the golfer’s Ryder Cup experience in the past, and the other factor is prior experience as a Vice Captain.

The most recent US Captain was, of course, Zach Johnson. He was a Vice Captain in the 2021 and 2018 editions of the tournament. Similar patterns were observed with the captains of those two editions as well. Steve Stricker was a Vice Captain in 2016 and 2018, before becoming the Captain in 2021. It was the same for Jim Furyk, who was the Captain in 2018.

All the aforementioned golfers have had impressive Ryder Cup records as players as well. What about Tiger Woods? It would be a joke to even try to explain his significance to the Ryder Cup as a player. However, what about the prior experience as a Vice Captain?

Tiger Woods played the role of vice-captain twice in the past. Once in 2016, and again in 2018. In 2018, however, there was a surprise change later. Jim Furyk, who was the Captain that year, decided he needed Tiger Woods to play in the tournament. He chose him as a captain’s pick. Tiger Woods stepped down as vice-captain and proceeded as a player in that year.

So yes, he has the required experience as a player and as a vice-captain. But what about the recent two Ryder Cups? He hasn’t been involved at all. Meanwhile, there is Fred Couples who has been a Vice Captain in the 2021 Ryder Cup and this year as well.

Will the Woods-Garcia clash happen or not?

Well, if Tiger Woods is interested in the role, he definitely has the eligibility to be the Captain. So that’s settled there. It is likely that Tiger Woods will be the Captain in 2025, provided he wants to be.

Now let’s focus on the second part of Paul Azinger’s prophecy. What is the likelihood of Sergio Garcia leading the European team and the epic clash happening at Bethpage Black?

Well, to put it briefly, Garcia is now in LIV golf, but he has once been a Vice Captain before. In 2010, he was on a break, and he played the role of Vice Captain.

However, there is a problem. Henrik Stenson was initially the Captain for this year. Later Luke Donald stepped in and replaced him because Stenson had switched to LIV golf. Of course, the future is uncertain and LIV Golf’s future equations with the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour are highly unpredictable.

But going by the current circumstances, Sergio Garcia probably won’t be leading the 2025 Ryder Cup Europe team. We certainly hope things change though! This clash sounds to be of epic proportions, and it would be a surreal experience to go through if it came true.
