A hit yet again for Patrick Reed! Back in 2022, the golfer was faced with an unfortunate situation when his lawsuit against Brandel Chamblee and other members of the media was dismissed by the Federal Court. However, fast forward to the present, and it seems the LIV golfer’s attempt at suing the group has bitten him back on the hand, courtesy of a Florida Federal judge.

A new piece of news came to light a while back, reporting how a federal magistrate ruled Reed “to pay” the golf commentator and the news outlets’ money. He has been instructed to do so as compensation for the legal action that was taken against them for their comments criticizing him, along with his defection to the Saudi-backed league, which he dubbed as defamation.

Patrick Reed and the controversial lawsuit

Popular for his conduct and behavior on and off the course, Reed had managed to dominate the headlines a while back when he sued Golf Channel and its employees, including Chamblee, Damon Hack, Eamon Lunch, and Shane Bacon, along with Golfweek and Conde Nast, for $750 million. The lawsuit, which was again refiled in Florida, was dismissed by U.S. District Judge Timothy J. Corrigan.

Reed had claimed that the defendants were engaged in the act of “spreading lies” about the golfer and his association with LIV Golf. However, Corrigan stated that the 33-year-old had failed “to bring actionable defamation claims” under Florida Law and the First Amendment, resulting in his case being dismissed.

Adding on, the judge pointed out how the “amended complaints” he set forward in September last year, before the Ryder Cup, referenced “over 50 different allegedly defamatory statements.” However, not all of them pertain to the athlete but are about the PIF-funded circuit of which the professional is but a part.

What about Chamblee? Following the recent ruling, the commentator also attacked the LIV golfer.“To be fair he has been bought,” tweeted the 61-year-old on his social media handle before dubbing him as someone who “works for a man who doesn’t allow free speech.” Ruthless in his counter, one must say!

Although the court went ahead to declare it to not constitute defamation, along with ordering compensation from the American, it is undeniable that the golf media’s statements were hurtful to the golfer. Nevertheless, the court couldn’t help but find the latter’s lawsuit nothing short of “meritless” all the while stifling “free speech!”
