Unfortunately, Patrick Reed’s name is often associated with ‘cheating’ and has been done so ever since his college days. Over time, his name was even being used to compare many professionals including the likes of Wyndham Clark, Matthieu Pavon, and Collin Morikawa, when they were accused of unfair play. However, from where did all of this start for the LIV Golf Pro? Even the American doesn’t seem to have an inkling.

In a recent interview with Golf.com, the athlete went ahead to divulge his thoughts regarding the allegations of cheating and stealing that he experienced during his college days. Meanwhile, as he did so, Reed made sure to dub all of the claims as nothing short of “BS” all the while pointing out how no name has been put to these sources.

“I have no idea where that stuff came from,” confessed the 32-year-old when asked about the unfortunate accusations that came out against him and followed him from college. What’s more, the 1-time major champ also recounted how two of his former instructors also agreed with him; “I mean, both coaches, even you know, had signed statements saying that no, he’s never stolen or cheated ever.”

Adding on, Reed went ahead to dub the whole situation as nonsensical. “That stuff is, to me BS, obviously,” exclaimed the golfer before pointing out how these sources haven’t been verified properly. Elaborating on the same, he said, “I don’t know, who or, I mean, it’s all these unnamed sources… No one’s actually putting a name to it.” Also, expressing disbelief at the rumors, the LIV golfer disclosed, “I don’t know why or how something like that, whatever, came out, especially when it’s never came out when I was in college, like, no one has ever come up to me.”

Meanwhile, during the course of the interview, Patrick Reed stood his ground while asserting his innocence against the allegations that arose when he was a collegiate golfer at the University of Georgia. Back then, he was reportedly accused of playing a different ball closer to the fairway during a qualifying round after hitting a tee shot deep in the rough. Consequently, this apparently led to him being let go of the team. Moreover, the athlete was also blamed for a missing watch, $400, and a Scotty Cameron putter from the team’s facility after he showed up the next day with a lot of cash.

Intriguingly, these are but a part of the allegations that the 2018 Masters champ is being accused of. Interestingly, he was blamed for cheating by none other than Brandel Chamblee during the 2023 Dubai Desert Classic.

During the third round, the 9-time PGA Tour pro’s tee shot on the par-4, 17th, went ahead to get lodged in a tree. As a result, the golfer, after identifying the ball with the rules official, was allowed to take an unplayable penalty below the tree, resulting in a bogey. However, if he had not been able to identify the spheroid, then Reed would have had to make the tee shot again.

Chamblee, however, argued that there was no possible way for the equipment to find itself on the third tree but would have been lodged on the first one instead. Despite the 9-time PGA Tour champ explaining his side with immense certainty, the analyst went ahead to point out through a slow-motion recording of the same, disputing his claims.

While it is true that the DP World also issued its own statement regarding the situation followed by Rory McIlroy coming up to his defense, his past with certain allegations did paint him out to be on the darker side. Anyhow, after the scores of accusations, many in the community can’t help but be biased against Patrick Reed.
