He put up an amazing display of golf at the tough Pinehurst No. 2. Bryson DeChambeau had dished out four birdies at the opening round of the 2024 U.S. Open while placing himself tied at T4. It seems the athlete made easy work of the difficult course, right? Well, you couldn’t be more wrong, as the golfer apparently couldn’t help but point out how mentally exhausting the day’s play was soon after the end of the round.
DeChambeau was queried about the same in an interview on Thursday after his scintillating 3-under 67. Replying to the question, he said, “I would say from a mental exhaustion perspective, this was probably the most difficult that I’ve had in a long, long, long time.” The LIV Golf Pro also went ahead to recount how hard it was to concentrate on his gameplay despite having a Greens in Regulation percentage of 72.45% on LIV Golf: “I can’t remember the last time I mentally exerted myself that hard to focus on hitting fatter parts of the green instead of going for flags. I did that quite nicely until the last few holes.”
The golfer had teed off from the 10th tee at 1.25 P.M. and had made a flawless play on the front nine. The ‘Scientist’ couldn’t, meanwhile, replicate his performance on the back nine as he went and carded a bogey on the par-4 7th. This, in turn, caused him to go from a score of 4-under to 3 under by the end of the day’s play.

The question then naturally arises: what will he do on Friday? Not to worry, as the athlete wasn’t too concerned about the second round, on the condition that he was prepared. “I got to keep my hem energy up there. Eat a lot,” divulged DeChambeau before adding, “Get a lot of carbs and food in me, good protein, just recover tonight. I got to get up early and go back at it in the morning. Recovery is going to be key. I’m going to go hit a couple of balls, make sure it’s all dialed in and ready for tomorrow.”

The 2020 U.S. Open champ sure has set up a plan ahead of the Friday round at the ongoing major. This is not surprising since the golfer himself had admitted to the problem of golf being mentally tiring, just as much as it is physically. However, he had a solution to the same problem back then.
Bryson DeChambeau speaks honestly on golf’s mental struggles
“There are so many great golfers that have had experiences of pressure at a young age,” admitted the LIV Golf pro before recounting his own experience, “relating it back to myself for just a moment, there’s been numerous times where I’ve second-guessed myself on a massive level.” DeChambeau then remembered how he had experienced the same back in 2016 when he missed 14 cuts, as well as in 2022 when he joined LIV.

The athlete went ahead to bring in the team aspect of the Saudi-backed league and mentioned how it was a solution to the undue pressure that he faced back then. “Those guys lifted me up,” confessed the one-time major champ while alluding to his team, Crushers GC, “I’ve talked about it before. Those guys lifted me up, and it would be a different situation if those guys weren’t here. If they weren’t there to push me forward and go, no, come on, Bryson, you can do it.”
The pro, unfortunately, won’t be able to find his team on the field. Regardless, his fans would hope that Bryson DeChambeau jumps back from the struggles he faced on Thursday while clinching his second major title.
