More than a year ago, when some of the most prominent names from the PGA Tour and DP World Tour joined LIV golf, the decision came with a few setbacks. The major disadvantage was the reluctance of Ryder Cup captains to consider them for a spot on the team.

Now, another issue that has surfaced is the matter of world ranking and its fairness. Some time back, several LIV golfers submitted a request for considering LIV golf events for the OWGR standings. A delay in the decision on the matter and the whole deal has particularly agitated one LIV golfer.

Is the OWGR unfair?

In a recent interview with the bunkered, South African golfer Louis Oosthuizen spoke about his thoughts on the Official World Golf Ranking, or the OWGR. He sounded quite disappointed with the way the system works. He explained why he is not willing to subscribe to the way things work currently.

Oosthuizen was playing for both the PGA and the DP World Tours prior to joining the PIF-backed league. Besides LIV, he continues to play for the Asian Tour and the Sunshine Tour. The 40-year-old is of the opinion that the OWGR carries a bias toward the PGA Tour. “You can say it’s more PGA Tour ranking than anything else.”

The title winner of the 2010 Open Championship mentioned his theory that even a poorly playing PGA Tour golfer can still rank in the top 50 in the OWGR if he can continue to play the ‘elevated’ events. “It’s ridiculous…” He exclaimed. He further said, “If that’s a good system, I’m glad I’m not a part of it.”

What he might imply is that playing well in the PGA Tour events naturally translates into a good OWGR. A corollary of which could be that equally good players who don’t play for the PGA Tour could get sidelined, perhaps.

Oosthuizen also spoke about how it baffles him that even prominent LIV golfers in the form of their lives are ranking poorly in the OWGR system.

A look at the OWGR list will tell you that Brooks Koepka is probably the only LIV golfer in the top 50. Patrick Reed is not in the top 50, but he is within the top 100. However, players like Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, and Phil Mickelson don’t even make it to the top 100.

This is because LIV golf events don’t add up points for the players in the OWGR, just like Ryder Cup standings.

Speaking of DeChambeau, the ‘mad scientist’ spoke about this months back and expressed his disappointment. “I think that they need to come to a resolution or it will become obsolete.”

With the LIV golf and PGA Tour negotiations going on, it’s uncertain how things are likely to turn out in the future. But the LIV golfers will probably have to keep facing their battles until something changes.
