“I think he’s watching… We’ve been in touch, so I know that he’s keeping an eye. The only thing I can do is keep playing good golf,” said Sergio Garcia after claiming a dominating win at LIV Golf Hong Kong with a remarkable score of 192 (-18). The golfer was evidently excited about the competition, expressing his hopes of catching Luke Donald’s eye for the Ryder Cup team, but now the golfer has missed the cut at the Masters for three consecutive years.
And well, one PGA Tour pro believes that despite the wins, the lack of form at the biggest major may hamper Garcia’s chance to make it to the Ryder Cup team. Speaking on the latest episode of Beyond The Clubhouse, McGinley shared his thoughts on Garcia’s Ryder Cup chances. As the strategic director of the European Ryder Cup team, McGinley believes Garcia’s performance in the four majors will be crucial in determining whether Luke Donald will consider him for a pick.
“Unless [he plays] a number of events which is unlikely that are related to that, I can’t pick them,” McGinley said, drawing parallels with his own experience as captain in 2014. While Garcia has been playing fantastically well on the LIV tour and has some impressive underlying statistics, McGinley thinks it’s hard to relate his performance to the Ryder Cup setup. McGinley also discussed the challenge Sergio Garcia faces in making the Ryder Cup team, given his participation in LIV Golf rather than the DP World Tour.

“I would say the same thing for Sergio here. Unfortunately for him, because he’s playing a full schedule and doesn’t look to be playing much in Europe, it will be his performance in the four majors more than anything else that will dictate whether Luke is going to consider him for a pick or not.” The team room dynamic is also an important factor, and Garcia’s energy and desire for Team Europe are undeniable.
McGinley emphasized that Garcia’s decision to play a full LIV schedule and not participate in many European Tour events will make it tough for Donald to consider him for the team. With Garcia already in the PGA Championship, his results in the remaining majors will be crucial in deciding his Ryder Cup fate. “So how he performs in the next three majors, if he gets into them, I think that would be the biggest determining factor on how much Luke considers him for a pick.”

Unfortunately for Garcia, it seems like a tough road ahead, especially considering the bold move he made right after his disastrous form at the Masters.

Sergio Garcia makes bold move after 2025 Masters
The world of golf was left stunned when news broke that Sergio Garcia had cut ties with his long-time managers, Carlos Rodriguez and Irek Myskow, after two decades of partnership. The decision, confirmed by Garcia’s wife, Angela Akins Garcia, was made to avoid conflicts of interest due to Rodriguez’s new role as general manager of Torque. “Carlos Rodriguez is a wonderful guy, and we have a wonderful relationship. But he’s now the general manager of Torque, so it’s a conflict of interest,” she explained. This significant change marks the end of an era for Garcia, who had trusted Rodriguez and Myskow through the highs and lows of his career, including his historic 2017 Masters victory.
