It was a resounding “No” from Sergio Garcia’s side when he was asked whether he had anything left to prove in the sport. The LIV Golf Pro was queried about the same during the ongoing major championship at the 2024 U.S. Open. However, such a reply naturally makes one wonder as to whether the athlete finally divulged his retirement plans!

The professional was spotted in an interview at the Pinehurst Resort & C.C. on Thursday after the day’s play. While responding to the question, he expressed his love for the game while pointing out the need to get better without proving anyone anything: “I love what I do, which is playing golf. I’m a competitor. I try to do it the best I can. Do I have to prove anything? No, of course not. Would I like to play better and better every day? Of course, I would. Who wouldn’t? When it comes down to proving things, I don’t think so. I think I’ve done well enough.” It looks like the LIV golfer isn’t planning on retiring anytime soon but just subtly hinted at his drive to do more without caring about other people’s expectations.

One can’t deny that he tried to do the best he could at the 124th edition of the major championship. The golfer, after an amazing round of golf, placed himself at T9, tied with six others, including Corey Conners, S.H. Kim, Sam Bennett, Aaron Rai, Jackson Suber, and Thomas Detry. He had done so by carding a flawless 1-under 69 with just a single birdie at the par-5, 5th.

Sergio Garcia hasn’t just been performing well in the ongoing major alone. He has also placed himself in the 6th position in the season-long LIV Golf leaderboard with a total of 81.82 points. The Spaniard had raked in a total of three top-10 finishes, including two runner-up positions, at the event that took place in Mayakoba as well as Miami.

Coming back to the ongoing major. Such a performance by the 44-year-old wouldn’t have been possible had he not been called last-minute for the 124th edition of the event. The 1-time major champ was added as an alternate from Final Qualifying, which helped him make his 25th consecutive appearance at the prestigious event.

Sergio Garcia’s 25th year at the U.S. Open

Out of the 25 times he played in the major championship, Garcia has missed the cut a total of five times and has only placed an equal number of times inside the top 10. His best finish came at the 2005 edition when the tournament was played on the same course, the Pinehurst Resort & C.C. (Course No. 2). Back then, he had finished T3 with a figure of 5-over par 285 over four days of play.

While the golfer did manage to grab a chance to play at the event at the last minute, his fans would surely be hoping he gets into the field next year as well by making a mark at the ongoing edition. In order to do that, Garcia would have to either win the U.S. Open or finish inside the top 10 this year. Well, they can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that he made a good start!
