The tournament in Jeddah turned many heads in the golf community. Yes, we are talking about the LIV Golf event that ended in Saudi Arabia not too long ago. Well, now the fourth tournament on the 2024 calendar is close by, in none other than Hong Kong. The event is set to take place on March 8th and will continue until the 10th. However, this would be the first time that the course would be hosting the breakaway league.

As usual, LIV Golf Hong Kong would consist of a field of 54 golfers who are aiming for a cut from the $25 million prize pool, which includes money for both the team and individual events. Regardless of the ambition, only one person and one team can achieve the goal of the top spot!

The golfers, through the past three tournaments, have made it clear that they are stubbornly set on beating each other individually and as a team. Moreover, out of the 54 athletes divided into 13 teams and two wildcards, many would have undoubtedly captivated the hearts of fans with their performances recently, all the while cementing themselves as the top contenders for the event.

1. Joaquin Niemann: Dubbed the “hottest player in the world right now,”  the Torque GC captain has been making waves throughout the golf world. His stats from just this year are more than enough to justify his title right now. A T4 at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic and a T3 at the International Series Oman, along with two victories on the Saudi-backed league out of the three events that took place at Mayakoba and Jeddah, have indubitably marked him as a force to be reckoned with on the greens. What’s more, the golfer receiving invitations to the Masters Tournament, the Open, and the PGA Championship is more than enough evidence for the same. Truly a fan favorite at the moment.

2. Jon RahmFrom the moment he entered LIV Golf, the Spanish professional has cemented his place at the top rungs of the scoreboard. He finished T3 in Mayakoba, T8 in Las Vegas, and placed in the fifth spot in Jeddah. Besides, his amazing display of golf has helped his team rake in a win at the team event in the first tournament on the 2024 schedule. Underestimating the current No. 2 in the world would be definitely unwise.

3. Dustin JohnsonAlthough the captain of the 4Aces GC finished at T27 in Jeddah, he was a fierce opponent for the golfers in the previous two tournaments. He emerged triumphant at the event that was held in Las Vegas while finishing at T5 in Mayakoba, in which DJ also led his team to a scintillating runner-up position in the team event. He would be hoping to get back on his victory train with his squad to clinch their eighth win. However, in order to do that, the golfer would need to dish out the best he can, thus making him a worthy player to keep an eye out for.

4. Bryson DeChambeau: The ‘Scientist’ helped lead his team to a victory at the team event in LIV Golf Jeddah the past week. His T4 finish, which came as a result of his score of 8-under 198 over the three days of play, pushed his squad to a total of 38-under, thereby raking in the $3 million cut from the prize pool. Besides, the 2-time LIV Golf champ was able to finish at T9 in Las Vegas. Surely he would be aiming for his third win at LIV Golf Hong Kong to become its first champion.

5. Brooks KoepkaSince he couldn’t defend his title at Jeddah, the 33-year-old would undoubtedly be aiming for redemption at the upcoming event in Hong Kong. Moreover, despite not coming out on top at the Las Vegas tournament, he was able to lead his squad to a triumphant win, marking their second victory on the PIF-funded circuit. He is truly a top pick to win the event.

The Saudi-backed league’s first appearance at Hong Kong Golf Club

“HKGC is an incredibly special place in the world of golf,” stated 5-time Open champ Peter Thomson about the course in Sheung Shui, Hong Kong. Established in 1889, the par-70, 6710-yard layout has been home to other tournaments in the sport for more than 60 years and has hosted the Hong Kong Open every year since 1959. What’s more, the Golf Club at Fanling is home to three 18-hole courses and facilities set aside for practice.
