Does the massive prize money in LIV Golf make it more exciting than traditional PGA Tour events?

As it always has been the case, most things stay constant on LIV Golf. Whether it be the similar names at every event or the prize money offered at the Saudi-backed circuit, things rarely change. So, for the 12th LIV Golf event of the year at Greenbrier in the iconic Old White Course, the breakaway circuit will have another $25 million in total prize purse.

Out of this, $20 million will be distributed for the individual games, while $5 million will be up for the top three teams on the leaderboard. What will the individual winner get from the $20 million? Well, LIV Golf gives away $4 million to the triumphant, while the runner-up bags $2.25 million, and the third on the leaderboard after Sunday’s final round receives $1.5 million.

Comparatively, it is the highest prize purse offered this week in men’s golf. On the other side, the PGA Tour has started the FedExCup playoffs with the St. Jude Championship but the PGA Tour will be giving away $3.6 million to its winner, a $400,000 deficit from LIV’s offer. As for the winner of the team competition, they will take home $3 million, distributed equally among the four members. Additionally, the second and third will get a check of $1.5 million and $500,000, respectively.

Who can win the LIV Golf Individual Championship?

It is his LIV Golf debut, but the Spaniard has been playing some incredible golf in the 2024 season. Jon Rahm won the LIV Golf United Kingdom by JCB before the 2024 Paris Olympics and claimed his maiden victory to be second on the LIV Golf season-long standings. He follows Chilean pro, Joaquin Niemann and has only 20 points from taking over. His teammate, Tyrrell Hatton, has also entered the individual champion race at third.

But it seems that Rahm might be the fortunate one to take away the title in his debut year, as he has taken the lead at LIV Golf Greenbrier after the second round ended, hinting at a second LIV Golf victory. The win at Old White Course will solidify the 2-time major winner as the individual champion. Unless Joaquin Niemann takes the LIV Golf Chicago title or finishes in the top 5, Rahm wouldn’t crowned the champion.

It looks like a close race between Niemann and Rahm and all will come down to their performance at the LIV Golf Greenbrier. Who will surpass whom and take over the Old White Course? Stay tuned to find out.
