In a surprising turn of events, R&A CEO Martin Slumbers has announced his exit from the position. The 63-year-old has held the position since 2015, commanding for over eight years. A couple of months ago, in an interview with Today’s Golfer, the CEO of R&A revealed his relations with the PIF Governor. The two of them played as partners during the 2023 Dunhill Links Championship. This paring led people to speculate that something was cooking between the two golf bodies.
Martin Slumbers stated he is open to having a conversation with Yasir Al-Rumayyan to help them out. He said, “I think that Saudi Arabia, as a national federation, is very serious about developing golf in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. If we can help them with some of those programs that are tried and tested now, we will help.”
However, Slumbers’s comments may lead to people speculating that getting into talks for a partnership with PIF might be what caused the resignation. And he has indeed been becoming an ally of the Saudis in golf.
