Of all the things one could find in a golfer’s office, a million-year-old dinosaur skull is not something expected. But that’s Phil Mickelson for you. The 53-year-old pro has lived many lives, once a PGA Tour favorite, now a LIV Golf staunch supporter, Lefty is also a loving husband. And the story behind the skull hanging on his wall is connected to his wife, Amy Mickelson.
So when and how did he get it? In an interview with Golf Digest in 2009, Bob Verdi casually asked him, what was up with it. Mickelson explained that it was a birthday gift from his wife, Amy, in June 2008. Lefty pulled out his encyclopedic mind about paleontology and explained that at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, there is a well-preserved Tyrannosaurus rex named Sue with a head size of five feet.
However, the one his wife gifted him was the supposedly long-lost relative of the T-Rex from Northern Asia, ‘Tarbosaurus bataar‘, from Mongolia. It was a female head and Mickelson clarified that he didn’t inspect or anything, but was only answering the question. Although he said, “It’s the coolest thing I’ve ever gotten,” Lefty never gave the skull any name. But in his office roundtable with his wife and kids, the era of 65 million years ago was often talked about.

After all, his first daughter, Amanda Isabel Mickelson, was always fascinated by the subject of paleontology and all the UFO stuff. With such an iconic item hanging in Mickelson’s office, did he ever think about selling it and is it the only unique gift he has?

Mickelson is one man with all the weird gifts in his office
The Tarbosaurus bataar gifted to Phil Mickelson is one veritable treasure for the fossil fanatics. It could be auctioned anywhere between $220,000 to even $1 million. However, it was a gift from his wife and he would never sell for it money. At least not now, because undoubtedly Mickelson has had enough of it.
However, the 6-time major winner revealed that people still tried to buy it from him. When he was asked about the worth of the skull, he said, “We’ve had four or five people bid on it, but it’s not for sale. Talk about giving something to the man who has everything.” Even a 300-pound meteorite which is the size of a basketball.

This was also Amy Mickelson’s gift to Lefty given on the occasion of 2008 Christmas. The LIV Golf pro explained that it was from a meteorite crash in Argentina in 1930. He also has a smaller meteorite of a softball size given by his friend. Jokingly, Mickelson said, “There are more meteorites around than dinosaurs.” From various trophies to green jackets, Mickelson certainly seems to have everything!
