A few days ago, the 88th edition of the Masters Tournament unveiled its 80-player list for the upcoming event, initially bringing a sense of relief to golf fans as Angel Cabrera’s name was notably absent.

But a recent post on X from NUCLR GOLF sparked controversy among golf fans. The tweet invoked an uproar and garnered a lot of disapproval from the netizens regarding the tournament’s stance toward the ex-convict golfer.

Angel Cabrera spent 30 months in prison in Brazil and Argentina and last participated in the Masters in 2019. Cabrera’s manager, Manuel Tagle, emphasized that while competing in the Masters is a dream for the 54-year-old, his immediate priority is securing a visa to resume his professional career.

NUCLR GOLF posted a tweet today on their X account that Augusta National is in “constant contact” with “Cabrera’s representatives” as he seeks to obtain a “visa” for entry into the United States. Following “his release from prison,” if Cabrera successfully secures a visa, the Masters Tournament has conveyed that the former champion is “welcome to compete.”According to Golf Week,  Augusta National Golf Club Chairman Fred Ridley stated, “As we all know, he has been unable to participate in the Masters the last couple of years due to legal issues… we’ll definitely welcome him back if he’s able to straighten out those legal issues.”

Controversy Surrounding Angel Cabrera’s Masters Return: Fan Concerns Emerge

Numerous fans have voiced their concerns and reservations regarding the decision to welcome Angel Cabrera to the Masters. The golfer’s past convictions, particularly for domestic violence, have sparked discussions among fans, with many expressing unease or disapproval of Augusta National’s choice to include him in the tournament.

A fan was infuriated and claimed that Cabrera being potentially invited back to Augusta was “a joke,” citing that Phil Mickelson himself wasn’t invited back after his LIV Golf controversy in 2021. The fan, of course, got it wrong, as a number of others went on to point out and make him aware that Mickelson has always been invited to the Masters and holds a lifelong invitation.

Another comment sarcastically remarked on the irony of the situation. The fan recalled the speculation that Brooks Koepka might be excluded from the Masters due to his involvement with the breakaway league. “And people thought they would keep Brooks out bc he joined liv!!! 😂”
