The most-awaited showdown of the golf community has finally made an advancement. LIV Golfers Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau will have a faceoff against PGA Tour loyalists Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy. The initial announcement in September was enough to leave the golf community waiting for further updates, and even the participating golfers were keen on the event. Now that details are here, it seems LIV Golf is much more excited than the PGA Tour.
The duel of the golfers or more like the Tours is being called ‘The Showdown’ and will be hosted at the Shadow Creek Golf Club in Las Vegas on December 17, 2024. It is the first time one of the biggest names on the opposite spectrum of golf will be facing off. There will be no prize money for the winning team, just representation and bragging rights for the winning team.
It looks like LIV has already started the showdown’s promotion. NUCLR Golf recently took to their official X account and shared how LIV is marketing the tournament, but it had a twist. The page wrote, “LIV Golf is promoting ‘The Showdown’ between Rory / Scottie vs. Bryson / Brooks. Their graphic also has the PGA TOUR golfers on it – first, we’ve seen any promo of this kind.”

LIV Golf’s action goes to show that they are all about promoting the game, over the golfers. It’s the fans’ emotions that matter the most, after all, they have been the ones who are left most divided ever since LIV’s inception. Well, this was the idea behind this event as well! As the Northern Irishman mentioned, “I wouldn’t say it’s meant to send a message. It’s more we wanted to do something that, I guess, all golf fans could get excited about. We all thought it was a good idea and something that hopefully is a sign of things to come in the future.”
The golf community is left more thrilled after seeing LIV’s gesture. They will finally get to witness something that they have been waiting for.
What’s your perspective on:
Could 'The Showdown' become golf's fifth major, or is it just a fleeting spectacle?

The golf community finds hope amid LIV Golf promotion
The inception of LIV Golf in 2022 left the golf fans in splits. To make a settlement, a PIF merger between the two leagues was announced and was to be done by December 31, 2023. It has been close to one year, but there have been no final announcements as to where the merger stands.
Every time the PGA Tour Advisory Council members are asked about the progress, the only detail given is that it is still in action and the information is confidential. This has rendered both the golf fans and a few players frustrated. However, the official announcements of the event have brought optimism among the fans. While one of them wrote, “There’s HOPE?!” Another could not hold their excitement and commented, “This one should be awesome!”
The viewership numbers and the TV ratings have been dropping. Be it the majors, any PGA Tour events, or LIV Golf events. This is because of the restrictions on the players from participating in the championships together. However, The Showdown could be so massive that one of them believes it could become a major, adding to the list of already existing four majors. They wrote, “No joke if that becomes a yearly event where LIV and PGA send their best in a showdown; that could be a 5th major in the making. This is the start of something beautiful.”

However, fans also have a few suggestions! Rory McIlroy stands third on the OWGR list and T9 on the FedEx Cup final standings after the Tour Championship. While he has managed to put up a great fight throughout the season, the Northern Irishman has failed to capture any win this year. On the other hand, Xander Schauffele ranks second on the OWGR list and T4 on the FedEx Cup standings. He has also bagged two wins this season and given a neck-to-neck fight against Scottie Scheffler. Additionally, Collin Morikawa, despite going winless on the PGA Tour, has eight top-10 finishes on the Tour this season and is ranked second on the final FedEx Cup standings and fourth on the OWGR list. Taking to the statistics, one of the fans suggested, “I would’ve liked to see Xander or Collin instead of Rory.”
The LIV Golf events are not qualified for the OWGR points. This is because instead of playing the regular 72-hole format, they follow the 54-hole format. The events are also known for hosting huge parties, both before and after the event. Due to the stigma of more arrangements than actual gameplay in the breakaway league’s events, a lot of golf fans have never really tuned in to any of the events.
However, the showdown will change things. One of them taking to this simply commented, “I’ve never watched a LIV event; I don’t think I ever will. But I’ll be cheering for the LIV boys in this. Talk about personality vs. duds.”
