Does Bryson DeChambeau's Valderrama performance prove he's still a fan favorite, no matter the drama?

DeChambeau! DeChambeau! DeChambeau! Chants of Bryson DeChambeau’s name are all around. But there’s more to this 2024 US Open winner’s achievement than his scientific skills, which bring him glory. It’s also his charming personality that makes him a fan favorite, and oh, has given him the name, man of the people. And no amount of trouble in his personal life can take away from the likeness he enjoys from fans.

But what was this ongoing trouble in DeChambeau’s paradise? Well, the 30-year-old claims that his former coach, Mike Schy, tried “extorting” over $2 million from him after his U.S. Open victory at Pinehurst on the grounds of “complete lies.” Despite such heavy allegations, DeChambeau’s charm goes untouched.

A glimpse of this was recently seen at LIV Golf Andalucia. When a fan threw their hat at the Crusher’s GC captain in Valderamma, his reaction was not one filled with annoyance. Instead, he decided to double up the fashionable hat on top of his own hat.

Innovative, right? Well, what isn’t with this physics major? Crushers GC was quick to share this moment on their Instagram. They wrote, “Double hat for the win,” possibly hinting at how they’ve been manifesting a win for their captain to boost his morals going into The Open Championship weekend at Royal Troon.

Long before, however, Phil Mickelson predicted the hype that surrounds DeChambeau today. Talking about his U.S. Open win, Lefty said, “I think Bryson’s the most charismatic and fun player to watch in the game today. He’s exciting because he hits it so far, but he’s also exciting because he connects with the fans and he has this great energy.” And fans agree. Their love for DeChambeau was clear as they poured in their reactions to his recent style antics. So what is it that the fans exactly have to say?

Bryson DeChambeau did not always enjoy the same love that he does now. For long, this calculative golfing mastermind was known to have a ‘know-it-all attitude’ that made some fans hate him. But not anymore. Fans left comments like, “How was this guy ever hated? It’s beyond me,” and “Bryson is the heart of golf right now. I don’t know how people can hate him. Rory isn’t doing that,” in hopes of demonstrating their support. A vile of this hatred was also channeled onto DeChambeau when he won the U.S. Open with one stroke over Rory McIlroy as people probably wanted to see the Northern Irishman end his decade-old drought. But with the kind of performance he has given in the other two majors this year, T6 at Masters, and T2 at Valhalla, he surely is not the one to hate.
