It is truly impressive how much fun the LIV golfers have among themselves. The Saudi-backed circuit has given new meaning to the game of golf with its smaller numbers and big pockets. The players on the PIF’s circuit have openly claimed how happy they are and have often taken a stance against naysayers in unison. And why wouldn’t they when the events are less starchy and more laughter?
Two beloved captains from rivaling teams, Crushers GC and HyFlyers GC, on the Saudi circuit even announced their intent to play one-on-one for Youtube coverage. But after the latest move by Bryson DeChambeau that has left everyone awestruck, will Phil Mickelson still want to fulfill that challenge?

DeChambeau and Mickelson were having the time of their lives. Amidst the LIV Golf Greenbrier event, the two captains had an entertaining banter when the leader of the Crushers GC took an incredibly difficult shot.
The ball lay at the edge of a steep, and he explained how he was going to make it fly over to the greens. “Look at this lie,” he started. “So, it’s going to be a hooded shot.” He calculated the angle and decided to make the ball. “Come out low, pop up, and trickle down.”
And so he did. DeChambeau made the ball do exactly the kind of antics he wanted, which was a difficult shot to begin with. What was astounding was seeing Phil Mickelson standing with his mouth open. “You’re going to give me that for a par,” said Lefty. “That’s a gimme par,” he added.

In light of this shot, Mickelson may already be dreading challenging the Scientist in the player-on-player 9-hole challenge. He truly used science to solve the problem of the shot. The 51-year-old golfer was stunned, not to mention in awe of the young golfer and his stunning talents on the greens, especially the one theory that was tested at the Augusta National Golf Club, home to the Masters Tournament every year.

The two captains may be leading different teams at the time on the Saudi circuit, and they are challengers even on a personal level. Far from being rivals, Mickelson once explained DeChambeau’s nickname, ‘The Scientist.’ With the green being so unpredictable, Lefty appreciated DeChambeau’s minute observation for differentiating between 50 feet and 55 feet in downhill conditions.

Back in 2020, Lefty spoke on the Pat McAfee show with pride about how the US Open Champion (at the time) is so different from his peers. “For example, lag putting; when we get on fast greens. What I would do and have done for 20 years with the help of Dave Pelz was build a reference stroke for 40 feet, 50 feet, 60 feet,” Mickelson revealed.
“So I know if I take it back this far and I accelerate as fast as I can, I know this putt’s going to go 50 feet. And I would have to reset that each week based on the green speeds.”
