Should relegated pros like Bubba Watson get a second chance at the 2024 LIV Golf Team Championship?

The final event of the 2024 LIV Golf season is upon us! Back in Chicago, Jon Rahm won the title of Individual Champion. But while he was celebrating his victory, the fate of five golfers for the upcoming season came to be set in stone. Now, with only the crown for the best team left to be awarded, these five athletes will make one last push at LIV Golf Dallas before their exit.

Yes, you read that right! The five athletes, including Kalle Samooja from Cleeks GC, Scott Vincent from Iron Heads GC, Branden Grace from Stinger GC, Bubba Watson from RangeGoats GC, and Kieran Vincent from Legion XIII, will tee off at the upcoming tournament in Dallas. They will do so in a bid to help their respective squads clinch the title of Team Champion at the Maridoe Golf Club.

The first two days of the tournament (the quarterfinals and the semifinals) include the 13 groups teeing it off against each other for a place in the final. However, Sunday will feature all 52 golfers teeing off in a stroke play round with a shotgun start, just like the regular events on the men’s circuit. Only the four teams that won the semifinals will have a chance to clinch the title.

Although there are a total of nine golfers in the Drop Zone on the 2024 season-long leaderboard, only five are in danger of being relegated for the next season. Athletes like Anthony Kim and Hudson Swafford were the two ‘Wild Card’ entries for the current season with one-year contracts. If the two can extend their agreements, they may be seen in the 2025 season teeing off for LIV Golf. However, they will not be able to participate in the upcoming tournament, as they are not part of any team.

Laurie Canter, placed at T52 on the season-long leaderboard, only participated in two events during the 2024 season, in Mayakoba and Las Vegas. Ben Campbell, on the other hand, managed to tee off at Miami, Houston, and Greenbrier, while dropping down to 57th on the leaderboard. Both are reserve players and will not be seen alongside the 52 golfers at LIV Golf Dallas.

The format of the 2024 Team Championship in LIV Golf Dallas

The top three teams—Crushers GC, Legion XIII, and Ripper GC—will receive a bye directly to the semifinals, where they can choose their opponent from Friday’s winners. The remaining eight teams will compete in the quarterfinals, set to kick off on September 20, in a head-to-head matchup consisting of two singles and a foursome.
