Do you believe in superstitions? Quite a funny thing to ask, in all honesty, isn’t it? But still, it would be a lie to say sports, including golf, are without the same. Well, let us travel back to the recently ended LIV Golf Team Championship when the Cameron Smith-led Ripper GC emerged victorious in Dallas. Although their win was all thanks to the performances dished out by the four, one can’t help but give a fifth person a piece of that victory cake. Enter Greg Norman!
A video shared by the Australian-led team on their X handle showcased the LIV Golf CEO congratulating the squad on their victory. While doing so, you can spot him having a conversation with three of its members. Listen closely and you’ll make out how Lucas Herbert and Matt Jones were recounting the moment when the Australian shark came to watch them play at the Maridoe Golf Club.
But as fate would have it, Norman could only spot ‘Herby’ carding a double bogey seven at the par-5, 7th hole. What about ‘Jonesy’? Well, the 44-year-old Australian also didn’t have much luck as he was also seen dishing out a bogey at the par-5, 13th. “I was so happy you left,” said Jones as he comically alluded to the shot he made at the 577-yard hole. The 69-year-old ex-pro could only laugh and recall how he just left after that without watching Marc Leishman, lest he be hit with bad luck as well!

And that, although a far catch, seems to have made a bit of effect, as per Greg Norman. The reason? Well, the result itself gives it away, doesn’t it? The Cameron Smith-led team was able to finish first with a figure of 11-under 277 over the day’s play. Moreover, the four golfers carded a total of 21 birdies while just dishing out six bogeys.
Impressed? You should take a look at the figures that the four athletes put up on the LIV Golf Team Championship’s final day. For all four of them managed to score low numbers with Smith carding a 68 (-4), Herbert – 69 (-3), Jones – 70 (-2), and Leishman – 70 (-2). Their performance even impressed Greg Norman, who took to congratulate the golfers on their victory.
Greg Norman exudes praise for the Cameron Smith-led Rippers GC
“What a year for the Rippers,” exclaimed the Australian shark as he alluded to the group’s run in 2024. “I mean great playoff down under in Australia and then obviously to come here and win the team finale is exciting for the boys.” Remarkably enough, the win at Dallas marks the team’s third victory in the 2024 season with its first two coming off in Adelaide and Singapore.

That’s not all, they even managed to secure three other podium finishes, two T2 and a T3 at the U.K.m Greenbrier, and Hong Kong events, respectively. This helped them claim the third spot in the leaderboard with 151 points allowing them to gain semifinal bye. If you’re a Cameron Smith-cum-Ripper GC fan, then you’ll agree with Norman’s words when he said, “Very, very happy for them!”
