Former Ryder Cup Vice Captain Phil Mickelson Shouts Out LIV Defectors Who He Thinks Are Worthy of the United States Stripes

The Ryder Cup is indeed one of the most highly acclaimed events of the golf season every year, and every player wants to be on the team competing for the honor of their country. However, not every player gets a chance to compete on the team. Only six players qualify by points, and another six, who are selected by the captain, get a chance to play in the international event.

While the golf world eagerly awaits the final team list, the public and even the pros themselves have suggestions for the sides of the prestigious event. Phil Mickelson, one of the highly accredited Ryder Cup veterans, is also one such pro. The 6-time major winner recently sat down with the media and shared his top picks of players from LIV Golf who he believes will make an interesting and worthy addition to the team this year.

Phil Mickelson shares his options for worthy LIV golfers for the Ryder Cup 

No golfer has played in more Ryder Cup events than Phil Mickelson, so he is bound to have some opinion about the upcoming one as well. This season’s tournament is just almost a month away, and golfers are gearing up to compete in Rome, Italy, for the highly coveted title. The 2021 Team USA Ryder Cup vice captain is in New Jersey for the thrilling LIV Golf event at Trump National Golf Club. He recently sat down for a press conference wherein an interviewer questioned him about the upcoming Ryder Cup and what his feelings were about it.

Lefty mentioned a few LIV Golf defectors that, according to him, will make a good addition to the American Ryder Cup team. The golfer praised Bryson DeChambeau for his stellar game in the Greenbrier event, where he scored a low score of 58. Other than DeChambeau, he praised Talor Gooch for “one of the best performances of the year.” Referring to Koepka as one of the toughest competitors, he also appreciated Dustin Johnson and Patrick Reed. As per Mickelson, if it were up to him, these LIV stars would be a shoo-in for the international face-off.

He referred to his fellow LIV golfers as “some of the best American players for sure.” As Lefty was concluding his stance on the LIV defectors, he said that it was surely up to Captain Zach Johnson to go with a team that brings about a certain chemistry, but the Saudi League has four or five members that warrant the best players.

The 45-time PGA Tour winner also pointed out how LIV Golf and the Ryder Cup have the same team element. He also spoke about how the team spirit of LIV golfers will be beneficial for the Ryder Cup team.

Mickelson points to the similarity between LIV Golf and the Ryder Cup 

During his interview, Lefty pointed out that the main element of the Ryder Cup is playing in teams, and it is the team dynamic that makes it easier to succeed in the Cup. He said that LIV golfers have created the aforementioned team dynamic, and they help each other be the best version of themselves on the course.
