He had made headlines a while back for his return to golf. Yes, we are talking about Anthony Kim and his joining LIV Golf as a wildcard. However, his comeback wasn’t as glorious as he could have hoped for it to be, owing to the two dismal finishes at Jeddah and Hong Kong. Despite this, he continues to play in a style that he finds “comfortable.”

The LIV Golf League’s official Instagram handle shared a post on its page, showcasing the grip the American Pro uses to hold his clubs. However, the fans did not take the post lightly and went ahead to take a jab at the LIV golfer for his style of play, leading to his recent poor performances.

The series of posts shared by the Saudi-backed league included an in-picture caption mentioning how “Anthony Kim’s choke-down grip is one of the most unique grips in professional golf.” The golfer’s grip on the club and a close-up of his hands complemented the caption.

Interestingly, the next post went ahead to divulge the reason behind his actions, explaining how he started doing so “because his childhood clubs were too long.” Meanwhile, a video of the 38-year-old driving the ball with the unique grip was also added along with the two pictures, which were uploaded to social media with the caption, “Do what feels comfortable.”

However, the post did not land itself in friendly territory, as many in the community decided to prod the LIV golfer for his recent finishes. Consequently, a follower went ahead to comment, “Do whatever it takes to shoot 80,” subtly jabbing him about his recent rounds where the golfer carded scores closer to 80 than to par, like his 76 during round 1 of the recent Hong Kong event.

Unfortunately, the comments targeting the 38-year-old did not stop there. Just hours after the upload of the series of posts on Instagram, the comments section exploded with responses from various followers.

Kim’s special gameplay sends the fans into a fervor

A lot of people took up the opportunity to take a jab at the golfer and his recent performances. There were a lot of reactions, ranging from those contradicting the uniqueness of the grip to others dubbing Kim a shadow of what he was when he was younger. Regardless, let us take a quick look at some of these responses.

Since his return to golf, the American Pro hasn’t been able to leave a mark. He finished T53 at Jeddah, a T50 at Hong Kong, and missed the cut at International Series Macau on the Asian Tour. As a result, a follower of the sport reacted, “So unique he barely makes the cut every event.”

Another enthusiast took to the comments section to sarcastically inquire whether the league did not have any other news to report. He did so all the while contesting the post, which dubbed the choke-down grip as special: “Slow news day? And no it’s not even close to unique.”

A Brooke Henderson fan enters the fray. A supporter of the LPGA Tour pro went ahead to point out how she also uses the same style of gripping the club. However, they did so while taking a poke at Kim and the LIV golfers as a whole while commenting, “Too bad Brooke Henderson does it. And is better at golf then him and 96% of LIV golfers.”

After turning professional in 2006, the golfer was able to rake in three wins on the PGA Tour. Consequently, this helped him earn the moniker ‘The Next Tiger Woods’. However, come 2024. His return from the break did not go as well as he could hope for, and a fan pointed it out, albeit indirectly, “What’s up with him? He was good in the past, but right now he isn’t!”

Meanwhile, another enthusiast of the sport couldn’t help but express their displeasure at watching the LIV golfer dominate the headlines. What’s more, they urged the golf world to stop focusing on him until he manages to shoot 65 or less: “And be like AK and shoot 81. Dude is a decade away from pro golf, let’s stop featuring him until he can break 65 for a considerable time.”
