It was the year 1999 when Sergio was playing the Arnold Palmer invitation in Florida. In the final hole, Sergio shot the ball, and it got stuck in a tree. Later, Garcia climbed the 15 ft tree and shot one-handed. The ball made its way on the fairway, and Sergio double-bogeyed that hole. However, soon after, the Spaniard had to withdraw from the match because of the injury that had transpired.
In a recent Instagram post shared by Sergio Garcia captioned as, “One of my favorite questions.” A young fan asked him why he climbed the tree to hit the ball. To which the LIV golfer replied, “Because the ball was on the tree. I didn’t hit it in the fairway, I hit in the tree instead, so I had to climb it.”
Although the Master winner lost the Invitational by one point to Tiger Woods, he etched an iconic moment in history. They named the tree now gone after him as the ‘Sergio tree’ at the Medinah Country Club.
