It was a scintillating second edition for the Saudi-backed circuit in 2023 as the twelve teams duked it out against each other for glory. Amidst all the inter-team rivalry, LIV Golf saw a lot of drama take place, especially in the squad led by none other than Brooks Koepka, the American Ryder Cup star.

And now, the ball is already in motion, with the new season set to start off in 2024. However, Koepka has found himself in a peculiar situation owing to the feud he has with his squadmate. Therefore, curiosity naturally arises: will the professional go for a restructuring of his team amid the launch of the Middle Eastern League’s new transfer window?

The two season-long leaderboards in the PIF-funded league saw a lot of change over the year as players saw themselves being placed in the three different zones. And Matthew Wolff, a member of Smash GC and Koepka’s teammate, saw himself finish at T27 in the player’s standings as part of the Open Zone.

As per the new transfer window launched by LIV Golf, any players finishing between 25-44 and “whose contracts are expiring” can become “free agents.” The aforementioned golfers have the option of re-signing with their previous team or joining one that has openings. Professionals including Pat Perez of Aces GC at T28, David Puig of Torque GC at T31, Matt Jones of Ripper GC at T37, Bernd Wiesberger, and Graeme McDowell of Cleeks GC at 41st and 42nd, respectively, have their contracts expired, making them part of the same.

However, for Wolff, whose agreement is not ending, he can get signed with a different group if both teams, including Smash GC, agree. This would most likely be the case since he experienced a disagreement with his skipper after the LIV Golf event in Washington. Following the same, the captain had even taken a subtle jab at the golfer during an interview at Jeddah, as he said, “There’s only three of us on their (Smash) team.”

But what’s more, his brother Chase Koepka was relegated from the group due to being in the ‘Drop Zone’ with Jason Kokrak at T23. This does show the 5X major winner’s need to restructure his team a bit. However, in the case of Wolff, it remains to be seen what would happen.

In a competition where the professionals have to come together as a team to win against others, such a rift has, unexpectedly, come as nothing short of a surprise.

The Wolff-Koepka rift

The 24-year-old had gone ahead to withdraw from the LIV Golf Washington event after the second round that took place at the Trump National Golf Club. He scored a total of 151 (+7), placing himself at T46. This led to Koepka expressing his displeasure as he mentioned how it’s not competitive when one quits on the round, all the while indicating how he has given up on Wolff.

However, this came as a shock to the young athlete, as he dubbed it “heartbreaking” to listen to his skipper’s statement of giving up on his teammate. He also pointed out how Koepka could have handled the situation better instead of conveying it through the news.
