The LIV Golf Invitational Series offers the biggest purse in a golf tournament. Apart from the offered prize money, the company paid millions to get the golfers to play in its league. Yet, they have put forward another money bag up for grab if the golfers are up for it.
According to Bob Harig of Sports Illustrated, the golfers will be rewarded with $54 million if anyone can shoot 54 in one of the league events. Yasir Othman Al-Rumayyan, the governor of the Saudi-based Public Investment Fund, revealed the same at the first LIV Golf trophy presentation ceremony in London. Notably, he is also the Chairman of the Newcastle United Football Club.

The offer is big but winning the money is not easy, considering one has to make 18 birdies on a par-72 course. However, it is not impossible. The lowest round in PGA Tour history is 58. Jim Furyk, 46 at the time, created the history at TPC River Highlands in the final round of the 2016 Travelers Championship. Meanwhile, a few, including the Australian golfer Rhein Gibson, have shot 55.

Gibson recorded the lowest score in a Korn Ferry Tour event held at the River Oaks Golf Club in Oklahoma in 2012. Nobody in a men’s official tournament has scored less than 55. However, since there is $54 million is on the line, some might try to win the prize.
Interestingly, the number 54 has some importance for LIV Golf. According to Greg Norman, the CEO of the company, ‘LIV’ is the roman numeral for 54. It is also the number of holes played in all league events. “54 is the lowest score you could shoot if you were to birdie every hole on a par-72 course,” he added. “So there is an aspirational aspect to the thinking.”
