Tensions at the US Open are going to be at an all-time high this year. The recently announced PGA Tour-LIV Golf merger, which sent shockwaves through the golf community, will no doubt be a hot topic during the impending major as well. One of the players who is going to be under significant scrutiny during the event is none other than much-decorated golfer Phil Mickelson.

But, the 52-year-old will be in the spotlight for more than just his fierce defense of the Saudi-backed breakaway league. After all, the American Open is the one major that has eluded Mickelson throughout his long and illustrious career. No other golfer has suffered as many heartbreaks in the US Open as Phil Mickelson has. The 6-time major winner has finished second in the tournament a record six times, the last one coming in 2013. A victory at the Los Angeles Country Club will help Lefty join the prestigious roster of golfers who have completed the elusive career grand slam.

Now, ahead of the tournament, Mickelson has found support in reigning British Open champion and LIV golfer Cam Smith. “Yeah, I’ve got to know him a little bit more. Phil, I think, likes to keep to himself a little bit,” shared Smith. The 29-year-old’s revelation will come as a surprise to many, considering the fiery side of Mickelson that has been on display in recent times.

What does the Aussie golfer think of his LIV pro’s chances at the US Open? “It would be awesome to see him do it this week,” confessed Smith. “I think the golf course as far as I’ve seen sets up for a straighter hitter, so maybe not. But we’ll see how it goes.

This year, Mickelson has the chance to remedy his sheer misfortune at the US Open, given his run in major events so far in 2023. Before the LIV pro kicks off his major campaign, let’s take a look at some of the most memorable near-misses that he has suffered over the years!

Phil Mickelson’s history at the US Open

Just like the PGA Championship got away from Arnold Palmer and the Masters continues to evade Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson also has been very unlucky at the US Open. He could have nabbed way more majors in his career if not for his six second-place finishes at the tournament.

In 1995, Mickelson finished in the top 10 of the US Open for the first time, tying at the 4th place on the leaderboard. Four years later, the golfer once again came very close to winning the event, ultimately losing it to Payne Stewart. Another memorable US Open involving Lefty took place in the major’s 2005 edition. That year, Tiger Woods, who has often been hailed as Mickelson’s rival, finished three shots ahead of the golfer to lift the title for a second time.

Years later, in 2013, he ended up suffering another heartbreaking loss against Justin Rose at the Merion Golf Club in Pennsylvania. Despite making five bogeys in his final round, the Englishman was able to claw his way back to the top to deny Mickelson the much-requited career grand slam.
