Lexi Thompson is one of LPGA’s veteran players. Indeed, she has seen the Tour working from close quarters since turning pro at merely 15 years old. In the last decade, one of the significant alterations of the Tour was its change in players’ dress code in 2017. The move was debated and caused a significant backlash, but Thompson put forward the loudest yet cleverest judgment of all.

Lexi Thompson’s new outfit surprises everyone

In July 2017, LPGA Player President, Vicki Goetze-Ackerman, detailed a change in the outfit of players on the ladies’ Tour. The revised instructions were largely seen as outdated and an attempt to disallow women from wearing what they wanted.

While the move caused an uproar in the women’s game, 27-year-old Lexi Thompson had a humorous take on the situation. She posted an image of herself in an antiquated costume which was shot in a sponsor shoot. She captioned the image, “Got my new #LPGA dress code compliant [golf] outfit ready to go!” accompanied by a laughing emoji. Here’s the post from Thompson’s feed from July 2017.

Was Thompson successful in making her point against the dress code?

The photo in question was captured in one of Thompson’s earlier photoshoots. In the event, she highlighted the plight of the 1900s women players to play golf while sporting a heavy outfit. “I don’t know how they played golf in those outfits, especially if it was hot out. I was wearing at least two layers on top and bottom, and a jacket on top, which was very restrictive on the back,” Thompson said at the time.

She also pointed out the difficulties in playing with a completely wooden golf club, having used it in the shoot. “I took a swing with a very old club and it’s made of totally different material. It was made of wood back then and now it’s graphite. I don’t know how my swing would have done with those clubs back then,” she said.
